Are cesspools illegal in Nassau County?
We are adding on a bathroom- our plumber told us that Cesspools are illegal in Nassau County and if we have one we have to switch to sewer which is $8,000 
We don't have any manholes on our property but we do have a little pipe that comes out (shaped like a candy cane but fatter) on our lawn. This is what makes him think we have a cesspool.
I've lived here all my life and never had the word "cesspool" mentioned. We've never had it pumped or cleaned (if we do have one)
8 thousand dollars is a "hellavuh" lot of $$- $$ that is coming out of a tight budget. Just want to get my facts straight.

I am not sure if they are illegal, but my parents have a candy cane shaped pipe and they do not have a cesspool.

Ditto, I am in Nassau and we have 2 of them buried under our front lawn! Definitely not illegal. Maybe so if there are available sewer connections.

my parents home has the same pipe and they are sewers, I believe its bc their house has no basement. The neighbors all have sewers but not that pipe and they have basements.
Do you have a basement?

Where do you live? If sewers are available I think you are supposed to connect. 8K sounds like a lot. You can call NC Dept. of Public Works or NC Health Dept. for info.
