Are his ears gonna hurt on the plane?
What can I do to make sure they don't? What if he screams when we take off?

Re: Are his ears gonna hurt on the plane?
OMG...I was actually thinking the same thing! We are going on a cruise in April. First we are flying to Florida and leaving from there. I am also worried about Jacob's ears hurting. He has only 1 bottle a day and by then he will be off of it so he wont be sucking on anything. I could use some suggestions too!

Wait till take off to give your child a bottle/sippy or pacifier. That way they are sucking. They should be fine.

Re: Are his ears gonna hurt on the plane?
Hailey has been on a plane 4 times now and we have never had any issues with the ears and I have horrible problems with my own when flying. Just have a bottle or pacifier for him to suck on during take off and landing. My ped told me that most childrens ears don't bother them when they are very little b/c the tubes in the ears are smaller.

Re: Are his ears gonna hurt on the plane?
Our doctor always suggested that we either give her the paci for take off and landing, or make sure she takes her bottle/sippy at that time. It's cruel, but I always restrict her fluid intake for an hour leading up to take off, so when the plane starts taking off, I know she's thirsty enough so she'll start drinking to reduce the pressure in her ears

Re: Are his ears gonna hurt on the plane?
OK- I'm going to be a nerd for a second....
Take-off isn't the issue- as the air is thinning out as you climb (cabin pressure at cruise altitude is usually about equal to 7000 foot elevation). You'll feel your ears squeak as air rushes in to equalize with the environment- but it definitely won't hurt.
It's LANDING that causes the issues for babies. As you descend, the air pressure increases to whatever the ground level elevation is. The pain is caused by that pressure within the ear increasing (remember all that air rushing in at climb? Well, now it's expanding).
I have seen some parents use Earplanes with their little ones.
The best recommendation is to give him his bottle as you begin descent. When I was a flight attendant I always made an announcement for parents. You could ask them to let you know when initial descent is about to begin.
Also, and I know it's painful to listen to/watch:
If he starts crying from the pain..... LET HIM CRY. The fastest way for a baby to "pop" his ears is to cry. Think about it- how do you see adults pop their ears? They open and close their jaw/mouth (it helps open the eustacion tube- which is where the air is trapped that's causing the pain). Well, when a baby cries, you can't get the jaw/mouth open any wider.
Hope this was helpful..... I know, I'm a pressurization dork.

Don't they have little inserts to put in their ears? I am pretty sure my friend did that with her DCs...

EXACTLY!! I couldn't have said it better myself.
Decent was way worse! And the Stewardess told us that if she cries, let her cry because it helps the ears.
I am still BFing, so I just nursed her when taking off and landing, which helped tremendously. But like I said..landing she was uncomfortable.
