Are Lawyers from a lawyer referral service any good?
We need a consult with a lawyer and are having a very hard time finding one that deals with the issue we're having. My only other option is to get a referral through the NC Lawyer referral service from the NC Bar Association. Their consultation fees are really cheap.
Do you think that the lawyers that are in that program aren't any good? We really need someone who knows what they're doing and I can't afford to pay several consultation fees to find the right one. I just thought that maybe those lawyers aren't as reputable as ones that don't advertise. Thanks!

It's one of those things that can go either way. I don't think you will necessarily get a "worse" lawyer through a Bar Association referral program, though. I would, however, have initial consultations with more than one suggested lawyer before retaining anyone.

Re: Are Lawyers from a lawyer referral service any good?
As an attorney the Bar referral service is the best way for me to get the right clients. The people who work in the local bar association office know me from my activities there and they match me up with people whose needs meet my skills. It is a win-win situation. I cut back on all advertising and I only have bar referral services, word of mouth and LIF. The bar referral services are the only places that I have ever "advertised" that did any screening to determine how much experience I have and they are the only places that ever check to see that I have the proper professional liability insurance. I would send a relative to a bar referral service if I did not know someone for what they needed.

Is it that you don't want to be photographed in your cowboy hat?

Marketing proposal: spend as little as possible on a TV commercial in 1996. Run it until the entire country calls you "cowboy hat man."

I think all lawyers go to law school, study, graduate, take the bar exam, pass the bar exam and are given a license.
Lawyers who get clients through the bar association referral service are no better or worse than lawyers you find in the yellow pages.

I just feel like the screening makes a huge difference. The referral services reject people. Yellow pages take anyone's money.
