are salaries negotiable in this economy?
my DH had a callback interview for a great job this week. however, we have no idea what the salary/benefits are - I guess we'd find out if he got the job.
In your experience, are salaries/benefits flexible even in this economy where so many people are looking for jobs? I'm hoping this place doesn't totally cheap-out on salary and pays at least as much as his last job did (in a lower COL city)

There is always room for negotiation I guess unless it's a civil job or a public sector job.
If it's a firm outside of the gov't I think you could.

I'd say Yes, all they can do is say no. But if he gets an offer and wants to negotiate some points, I would keep the request reasonable.

I think its more difficult in this economy - many people are willing to take lateral salaries for a new position because they are out of work (in the past, they would expect 10 - 20% to switch jobs). A lot of people are even taking paycuts just to be employed.
From my company's perspective, usually we have a range, i.e. 60 - 70 for a position and if we find someone at 72, 74, we could find a way to do it by shifting around the budget. Right now however, we are held to the original number, actually more so trying to fill at the 60. Does this make sense?
Good luck and as long as you do so in a professional manner, it never hurts. The worst they can say is No.

within reason yes. i think for certain industries the day of sign on and guaranteed bonuses are gone, but salary should be negotiable as long as it's fair and within reason (i.e. not out of scale with the job).

Agreed. I actually have gotten a few bonuses at work this year for exceeding some deadlines in getting paperwork approved to bring clients into my agency, which in turn brings $$$ into my company. I'm not talking thousands of $$$$, but a couple hundred bucks here and there.......reasonable stuff.
I also have been told that starting in the new year, I will be paid an extra amount of $$$ each month for taking on extra duties and responsibilities (that I have already been doing). Nothing crazy, but still, a great incentive.

Always negotiate, even in civil service positions. I just went into a Federal Job and negotiated like crazy. If you can justify the salary you are asking for then go for it!
