Are there ever days...
where you're just tired of teaching life lessons? Don't get me wrong... I love the kids. I'm glad they'll talk to me when they screw up. But this wasn't even in my class, and I was still there forever after school talking to three separate kids about how to handle it (it being their own stupidity) while the teacher whose class they actually screwed up in was on her merry way home. I don't blame her... and I wish I could detach sometimes when I don't need to really be there... but I can't see that look on their faces and just walk away. Ugh.
Sorry. Just needed to vent. I really hope tomorrow's better.

Re: Are there ever days...
This year the time I spend having conversations I never thought I'd have to have, on such a regular basis, with parents and students of high school students is just off the charts.
Logic and reason is just completely DEAD
It's at least 6 conversations/parents e-mails back and forth a day... on light days. There have been several days where I haven't gotten one other thing done.
I absolutely REFUSE to talk to a parent over the phone. More often than not they twist the conversation, hear only what they want to hear, and often repeat what they want to administration... then I need to go in to a meeting (of which I have absolutely no time for) to now tell an admin my side of the story No way... I refuse. Now I only e-mail... just the facts, objective language... and I cc guidance/spec asst. principal so there is no he said/she said.
I have gone so far as to suggest how to parent (in not so many words) and reminded them, that as teenagers their job is to try to dupe us and our job is to catch them doing it and to reverse the behavior.
Well, at meetings, that comment is met with silence and a blank, glazed over stare
There is no more decorum, no respect, no logical thinking.
It's exhausting.

Re: Are there ever days...
There's "life lessons" and then there's "parenting" for me- I find when it's a life lesson kind of thing I don't mind it so much but you're right, it does get draining. This year, I feel like I am teaching/telling my students things they don't hear from their parents, and it really drains my energy.
I do hope today was better.

Good point... the life lessons are worth teaching as draining as they might be. And today was definitely better than yesterday, thanks.
