Are they waiting until next year to tell us what kind of raise the NYPD got?
Weren't they supposed to decide a couple of months ago  just in time for Bloomberg to say the city is broke

Figured I'd update you... Unfortunately the PERB meeting scheduled for today was cancelled, and the neutral arbitrator has taken a 3 week vacation, so now we won't know anything until the end of the month or even june...
I'm a city cop and the waiting game is torturous... I hope we come out with at least 5 and 5 like last contract...

I just read about the meeting being cancelled as well.
As for the next contract....I hope it is way more than 5 and 5. It needs to be to come even close to matching the NYFD. And they wonder why nooone wants to take the NYC police exam and they are now hiring criminals b/c their digging at the bottom of the mud pile

for those of us who don't know the lingo what does "5 and 5" mean?
The NYC cops have been without a contract for FOUR YEARS...when the city and the dept. can't come to an agreement on a salary increase, it's goes to PERB (a neutral party) to decide the raise. However, PERB can only make 2 year deals....so technically this raise will be for 2005 and 2006. And then it will start all over again for 2007 and 2008. (For those that know, are these years right, or does it go back as far as 2004???)
Back to your original question, 5 and 5, is a 5% raise for year 1 out of contract and 5% raise for year 2 out of contract. Right now to even match what the NYFD is making they would need to get at least a 10 and 10 raise (meaning 20% raise of the 2 years). Which they probably wont get b/c PERB has never made a judgement over 5% (maybe 6%) ever.
the whole system $ucks. I dont know why Bloomberg hates the NYPD but he does. And unfortunately, it's not like the cops can strike...which I IMO, they should. Just go into work and do nada. They really need a stronger PBA "union" and leader.
ETA: Everytime the NYPD contract is being decided the city always claims poverty and that they are in a deficit. Now Bloomberg said that city resident may not get their $400 tax break if the cops get too much of a raise Meanwhile, it actuality they have a surplus. Maybe Bloomberg and Kelly need to take a fvcking pay cut.

Yup. Bloomberg is doing the job for free by his choice. He has to be paid "something" so he is making a dollar.
Ray Kelly was making $162,800 in 2005 as per NYMAG.com.

DH told me this but I didnt believe him. I guess he makes money off the city in other ways.
Kelly is probably making more than $162k now, 3 years later. He was a cop for years...I can't believe he doesnt fight more for them.
To think there was a time long ago when there was a waiting list to get on the NYPD...more people wanted to be NYC cop than in Nassau and Suffolk. now they can't even get people to take the test and everyone is leaving for other agencies when they can.

ugh---this news suuuuuuuucks
i really would love to see a retro check soon for my DH and all cops. it really stinks waiting. i feel like NYPD really gets the short end of the stick all the time when it comes to contract negotiations

Why not? It would be on his tax forms how much he made and I am sure somebody would get wind of this if he wasn't living up to his promise. This would most definitely get leaked, just like Patterson's taxes got leaked.
Bloomberg is a self-made billionaire. Do you think he cares if the city pays him? The city's salary is chump change to him.

Bloomberg is filthy rich from his company Bloomberg.com They are a big financial analysis company. They have these fancy computers that all the Wall St analysts use and have a rediculous annual fee. Plus the tv channel and I'm sure a bunch of other side businesses I don't know about. I used to know someone who worked there, the offices were amazing.

Yeah, I agree. Bloomberg isn't making money from this job as Mayor. How would that be possible? I have a lot of respect for Bloomberg. True, he can be a bit clinical when it comes to salaries and such (I am a teacher in the city,) but he made every dime of his multi-billions by himself--no inheritances, no stealing etc.
