Are you a perfectionist in your house?

So, our house was a property someone flipped inside; the work was wonderful...but there are few places where he "cut" corners that are now too late to fix unless we took this certain thing all down and began fresh, which is not financially possible. It's just one tiny thing here or there, which DH assures me NO ONE would ever see, but I am such a home control freak that I get so irritated...are you like this? How do you deal with little points "no one ever sees but you?"

I am. The fact that *I* knew of those imperfections would bother me tremendously.

Not really. It's irritating when someone does half-*** work, but I tell myself that it just adds to the charm of the house -- especially if it's something that no one will ever see!

Yeah, I thought I went over the house with a fine-tooth comb, but like anything else, sometimes you don't notice something until you're in. This morning, (while drying my hair with my head flipped over!) I noticed there's a tiny area...maybe 1 inch or 2 worth....where he didn't allow the tile to meet the bathtub. Maybe we can fix it; he didn't leave any spare tile. Chat Icon

At this point, I have just learned to ignore them. Chat Icon When they catch my eye I get mad, but I have to let it go. We just don't have the money to fix every little thing. Maybe in years to come, but not now. So when my DH and I do work, we try to make sure everything is as perfect as it can be and we are proud of ourselves for the work we do. Hopefully one day someone else with appreciate our work that we have done in our home. Chat Icon

I'd get some caulking and fill in the space with that. That would bother me too!

I'm not really a perfectionist, but since we're doing a lot of major work ourselves we're taking our time and making sure everything is perfect.

We did alot of the work ourselves in order to save money (sheet rock, tiling, painting, etc)

The little imperfections drive me crazy ! I wish it didn't bother me so much but I always stare at the not perfectly smooth walls when I'm sitting on the couch or the uneven tiles when I walk through the kitchen !!

Sometimes I'll say something to people and they'll always say "Oh, I didn't even notice!" so maybe they really don't ?! Chat Icon

My DH says nothing is perfect so I've been TRYING to think of our beautiful house as a whole instead of nit picking details. I probably should go to therapy for this Chat Icon Chat Icon

Hahaha !

I had an issue with our tiles too....our friend left this 2 inch gap near the walls because "the baseboard will cover it"....well it didn't Chat Icon so I filled the gap in with grout. While it's not perfect it's way better than the "ditch" that was there and it's not really noticeable since the baseboard is above it....looks sort of like a border now. But yeah, it still bothers me ! Chat Icon

how wonderful that you are part of the process, though! i tell you, being the daughter of an ace carpenter (it's his side thing, not his business...he's just very good and patient) has ruined me. I can't believe the things builders and homeowners try to hide. We haven't really gotten to doing anything to our basement, but I was cleaning the bathroom and the counter is granite downstairs...I was wiping up an lo and behold, the top part (the sink's actual backsplash) came off. Well, it was never put ON. Just placed there. Another job for dad. LOL

Yeh I guess cause it's new construction we can do that. The poor house had little blue pieces of tape all over.Chat Icon

Both my father and grandfather were master carpenters... I notice EVERY detail in houses... yes, it would drive me nuts... that's why I bought a house we could gut so I knew everything would be done right.

When I do the work myself, I am ok with a few imperfections. I get pretty ticked when I pay someone to do it though.

Re: Are you a perfectionist in your house?

yes and it bothers me that the house has many little conmetic issues. too many. but i for get them when someone walks in my house and compliments it.
then i remind myself that im lucky to have a home with all the issues going on with the mortgage world, and I am thankful that it looks as it does, even thought it is not perfect.

but ytes, sometimes i wake up early and inspect the hpuse and start getting annoyed at the little things. and since dh nor I is handy at all, we have to ihire someone to do anything we need.
oh well, it is what it is

Re: Are you a perfectionist in your house?

Thanks, girls. I appreciate the honest feedback and it's nice to know we all have little "things" we want to change. I mean, my dad is very, very handy, but some things are just there to stay and would require ripping out/up and wouldn't make sense, financially. I tell myself in time, we can eventually totally change some things, but I need to relax and embrace everything and love it how it is. Chat Icon
