Are you moving your accts to a different bank as a result of the housing crisis?
what banks are considered "safe"?
we have accts with WAMU and are seriously considering moving our $ to another bank.
2 options we're thinking of are Astoria Federal and BFCU

Re: Are you moving your accts to a different bank as a result of the housing crisis?
DH and I just discussed this yesterday, since WAMU is in the hot seat right now, and everything we have is with them. DH said it should be fine because it's insured by the FDIC....but I'm skeptic. If anything happens that requires insurance to kick in...it could take months to get our money back. What are you guys doing?

We moved the accounts out of WaMu months ago when we saw the # of mortgages they held go into foreclosure. It was a large percentage of the overall foreclosure count.

What are you guys doing? right - it's FDIC insured, but if God forbid something happened, it could take a long time to get your $ back.
I think that at minimum, we're going to take a chunk of our savings and open an acct with another bank.

We have a couple of accounts. We have a small savings with Commerce. (DH does the change thing). That gets trasferred into DSs account every few months. We have our main accounts with Astoria Federal, and I still have an old account with Chase. I use the Chase account for emergencies instead of keeping a credit card open. That way I earn interest on the account and I get rewards when I use the Visa Check Card. It's not a big amount, but enough if we had to rent a car in case of an accident or book a sudden trip if someone overseas got sick. That sort of thing.

DH's boss strongly recommended them b/c they're not involved in subprime and are very strict lenders.

I have all of DSs accounts there...his trust, CDs and his college savings were all through them. I also like that they are strict and they seem stable (not that I am an expert by any stretch). My mom has been banking with them for years, and they have been great with her as well. DH & I have our main accounts there as well, and we have our deposit box with them too. We got them for free since we have accounts with them.

We have so many accounts that they upgraded DH & I to a larger box, and we kept the document box for...well our documents. They are strict about that too though. We had to sign plus we had to have a deputy assigned to the account in the event that something happens (heaven forbid) to DH & I. They made the deputy bring in their license and a passport, along with their SS card.
