are you only allowed to sub in your certified area?
I am certified art k-12. Just got a job p/t ta not in my subject, I asked if they could use me as a sub if they needed anyone. The principal said I would only be able to sub in my subject area. Is this true or maybe just true in this school?

The districts I've subbed in had subs pretty much anywhere regardless of cert. I'm dual certified childhood/early childhood and have subbed in high school classes, special ed, art, music, library, etc.

I am certified in Spanish/Special Ed. 7-12 and recently 5-6 but I've subbed in everything from kindergarten to Forensic Science (11th and 12th graders).
This might just be a rule your district has. I wish I could only sub in my content area, I think it would've made my time more enjoyable.

anything. actually with just a BA you can sub for 40 days in a school year.
however, with the current employment climate, I supposed districts could be this specific.

The only time I have ever heard of this was in physical education, only certified PE teachers are supposed to be doing activity in the gym with the students. As a certified PE teacher I was a very hot commodity back when I was subbing .

I'm certified 1-6. As a building sub, I've done everything from K-5, Special Ed, music, art, library and PE.

Thanks for the clarification ladies this is what I thought. Sometimes I feel like when people hear I'm certified in art, they think that I did not have to take the same tests or classes everyone else did to become a teacher.

Ditto. I was in grad school when I subbed, and I wasn't certified in anything. They put me in Physics, French, the AP Calc exam... I was everywhere lol.
