Armour/natural desiccated thyroid for Hypothyroidism
does anyone take armour, naturthroid, or other natural desiccated thyroid medications for their hypothyroidism?
i am looking for a doctor who can prescribe this... it seems that a lot of docs won't.
any doc reccomendations are appreciated.. i am in the western suffolk area.

Heather - I think you're right..I did hear that armour was backordered... I was actually just looking for a doc that is comfortable prescribing it, or others like it, because it seems a lot of docs only want to hand out synthroid.
Prunepie - thanks for the suggestions! I will check them out.. probably calling Osani first.

Re: Armour/natural desiccated thyroid for Hypothyroidism
Dr. Vaswani in Garden City has prescribed it for me, also Dr. Moynihan in Wantagh. Moynihan is not an endo, just a DO. Sometimes you have better luck with a primary care doctor than an endocrinologist.

Re: Armour/natural desiccated thyroid for Hypothyroidism
Has anyone switched from synthroid to armour - and if YES - how was the transition? Any issues?
I know my bosses wife takes armour - but not sure who her doc is.
Thanks.

I did a few years ago. No major problems but I did get some palpitations. Your body uses Armour much more quickly than it does Synthroid so what I had to do was split my dose- take half in the morning and half late afternoon. I was fine once I started doing that.

Re: Armour/natural desiccated thyroid for Hypothyroidism
I go to Dr Vaswani. I have taken Synthroid for over 10 yrs now so I have no idea what his stance on Armour is, but I like him overall as an endo.
Not to derail the post, but can I ask what the benefits of Armour are over Synthroid?

"Why is desiccated thyroid a better treatment? Desiccated thyroid is bar-none superior to T4-only meds treatment (Synthroid, Levoxyl, Eltroxin, Norton, etc) because it is natural (your body accepts ALL of it, unless you have an allergy to porcine), it contains both T4 (as the storage hormone) and T3 (the most active hormone and necessary for every cell in your body), as well as T2, T1 and calcitonin. T2 has an important role in metabolism. Calcitonin is the hormone which keeps the calcium in your bones, and certain doctors have noticed improvement in bone density with patients on natural thyroid." stopthethyroidmadness.com
I actually just made an appt. with Dr.Vaswani! It wont be for about a month, but I guess we'll see what his stance is on natural desiccated thyroid then!
ETA: onlylisa says that he has prescribed it for her.
