Article: 11 Brands from 20th Century that might soon disappear in the next year or two....

Article on AOL.com

For one reason or another--due to slump in sales or poor management absorbing or merging into another company....these ten brands/chains might be going bye-bye in the next 2 years.....thoughts?

1. Old Navy
2. Countrywide Home Loans
3. XM Satellite Radio
4. E*Trade
5. K-Mart
6. Dodge
7. Circuit City
8. Gateway
9. Vonage
10. Yahoo!
11. Motorola

Just wanted to say that this article isn't saying they are bankrupt or anything--but good chances that most if not all these companies would be bought out or absorbed by parent companies--and the name itself would go away.

yeah i like old navy--especially since they just started focusing on plus size ladies sizes online---but i think they just need to downsize -- they have 1000 stores! they've gotta close a lot of them.

Based off the list and the fact that I do follow the business reports via wall street journal:

1. Old Navy (probably ok being the parent company saw growth in 2007. While Old Navy is down, it may murge into a discount line available at other retail locations under the same company, but doubtful)
2. Countrywide Home Loans (no surprise, it will be gone by end of 2008, early 2009)
3. XM Satellite Radio (should be ok for a little while, but there are talks of them merging with Sirus, but could be considered a monopoly then)
4. E*Trade (no surprise, but are still spending heavily in advertising, so may change)
5. K-Mart (NO SURPRISE, Sears is already looking to sell them off)
6. Dodge (Won't go anywhere. Its under the Dimlar Chrysler Dodge name, it will be fine)
7. Circuit City (Best Buy crushed them, I think they will be gone in 2009)
8. Gateway (should be ok for a little while)
9. Vonage (no surprise)
10. Yahoo! (Google crushed them and they are almost gone anyway)
11. Motorola (should be ok)

Circuit City by me closed already.
Motorola I heard was being bought out a few years ago.
I'll be lost without yahoo. I can't lie.
XM I heard was being bought by Sirius

and everything else--blah

I would miss old navy, they really do have some nice stuff for plus size ladies.

I think MSN bought yahoo, can't remember for sure if it was yahoo, but I think so. They said they will keep yahoo's format and MSN users would see changes.

Sirius is already amazing and once they get rid of XM, they will be even better! I don't see Dodge going away anytime soon, I think that one is a bit far fetched.

Old Navy is the only thing on that list that I would really care about disappearing.

Dodge is not owned by Daimler Chrylser anymore. Not since last year. Chrysler is owned by investors. The latest rumors I've heard is that they may make Chrylser the sedan/car segment, Dodge will be trucks, and Jeep will be SUVs. I don't see the Dodge name going away anytime soon. It's probably the 2nd best selling full size truck, right behind Ford.

Yahoo is getting serious pressure by Microsoft to buy them out. I'm not sure how long Yahoo can hold out. I think to survive, they are going to have to merge with someone. In a year, they will almost definitely not be just "Yahoo". They are still a very strong brand, which is why they are so attractive to Microsoft.

Microsoft absorbed HotMail, so they'll either keep the email address alive, or migrate you over, assuming they take over Yahoo. If Yahoo merges with someone else, I'm pretty sure the yahoo addresses will remain as-is.
