As a first time mom.. Will i really know when my water breaks?
Just curious. One of my fears is i wont know because a friend of mine had her water break 2 days prior and had now idea and ended up with a big infection. Just curious if it is as obvious as im thinking it will be. Im thinking it is gonna be like the hoover damn just broke open.

My water broke and at first I wasn't quite sure but after a few trickles of liquid I knew it had to be. It doesn't gush like on tv, it's really just like a trickle of water but you know it's not pee!

Well if you're like me there will be NO mistaking it. Once my water broke it gushed, and gushed, and gushed, and gushed.........you get the idea.

steph -
i have this fear too - my mom told me with MY birth - my head was blocking the opening - so it was a very tiny trickle. She had a doc appointment the morning i was born and HE told her - um, Diane, your water broke!! She had no idea...

Remember a majority of women don't even have their water break before they go into labor. You may not have to worry about this at all.

My water didn't break, but when they broke it in the hospital for me, even with the numbing of the epidural I could definitely feel a distinct big gush.

Mine was a big gush followed by a trickle all of the way to the hospital. Couldn't have possibly mistaken it for anything else.

Re: As a first time mom.. Will i really know when my water breaks?
When my water broke I was not sure at first. When I was on the phone with the NP at my doc's office I realized it had to be what I thought it was....I needed to sit on a towel at the kitchen table to finish the phone conversation.
And on a funny side note... it was early Easter Sunday morning so I went to the hospital to be monitored. Nothing was happening so I was told to go home. My hubby went to go get the car and I was standing at the entrance... leaking... all the way down my legs onto the pavement.... and it was steaming because it was chilly out. I couldn't do anything but stand there and laugh...

Re: As a first time mom.. Will i really know when my water breaks?
Mine never broke but I always had this irrational fear that it would break when I was in bed so I slept with a hospital chux pad under my sheet.

My water broke big time. I felt the "pop" and it was a big gush. There was no doubt for me.

So glad you said this because this is what happened to me. I FELT the POP in my sleep and immediately knew what it was. I jumped out of bed and ran, leaking all the way to the bathroom. It continued to leak all the way to the hospital. I had Poise pads at home that I used to "contain" it.

Re: As a first time mom.. Will i really know when my water breaks?
i think it depends on the person. some get it loike you seeon TV with a BIG gush... and others just feel like they wet their pants and others just feel a trickle of moisture. also, according to my pregancy book it is supposed to have a fishy odor, so that will be a clue too. i think once you're in the last month, you just need to watch carefully, but i tihnk with most people, they know and if you're not sure, you call the OB. try not to worry!
