As it's Communion season, a question about the ceremony...

My DD will be making her 1st Communion next year. I have such fond memories of MY 1st Communion. Our class (Catholic school) celebrated it as a whole and then the following week, the CCD kids had theirs. It was on a Saturday and the whole mass was simply dedicated to our communion celebrations.

At our parish now, the Communions are celebrated within a normal Sunday mass with ordinary parishioners. Also, the whole class is not together. It's divided into at least two different groups. I remember my niece's and nephew's baptisms were performed in the same way.

I know it's not a big deal in the scheme of things, but I just HATE the idea. No other local schools/parishes do it this way as far as I know.

Tell me how your parish handles it.

I know you're in the next Parish over so I'll speak about churches by name. In St. Mel's its during a regular Mass both Catholic School & CCD kids, the idea behind it is its a Parish celebration. I feel like they have sucked the "special" out of Communion this way. Its treated like an after-thought.
Yesterday my best friends son had his at St. Lukes.... same. EXCEPT, they still do the felt banner with your last name! I cried when I saw it because my son had missed that & I felt like growing up that was a huge right of passage, preparing & making your own banner for the big day.

Ours are at a Saturday mass where anyone can attend but there are reserved pews for each family. Our parish has Communions with the class. They had to make banners beforehand, which are hung at each family's pew.

They definitely made every child feel special.

Im in Queens, our parish has special communion masses on Saturday, just for this celebration. 10:00 for the catholic school kids and 1:00 for the CCD kids. Then all the communion kids are told to were there special outfits to church then next sunday to be recognized by the parish. We also made our banners to mark the pew. I am happy with this plan!

We aren't far from you.
Our communion is broken up into a choice of 3-4 weekends with both catholic school and ccd kids.
They do the felt name banner.

The reason I was told they separate the communions now ( and let you choose the date you want) is because in years past parents would complain. Children were upset that they weren't able to attend each others communion party since everyone was having it on the same day.
This way you get to make sure your cousin, best friend, etc. has the celebration on different days and you can attend all of them.

My daughter goes to Catholic school. Her mass was yesterday and it was both school kids and CCD kids. In our church, if you go to school here, but not church here you don't make communion here. It was a regular mass but reserved pews for Communicants and their families. It was quite lovely, actually.

As you know, my kids are in a Catholic school. DS made his Communion this past Saturday at a Mass that was only for the First Communion kids. It was his class from the Catholic School, plus a class from Religious Ed (CCD). It was 30 kids total. They had 4 masses total over 2 Saturdays for all the kids in the parish. DS class was all together, no one was split up.

They had to make a Communion banner with the last name on it (and you bet your bottom dollar I am saving it for my other kids). Every family had their own pew. It was a nice celebration and I am happy with how it went.

Many moons ago, the Catholic School kids made their Communion at their own Mass (separate from the CCD). But with the new pastor, he tries to incorporate everything as a parish, so that's why they changed it. That didn't go over so well with the Catholic school parents, but it is what it is!

So wait... If the child is from another parish, where do they make their Communion? Do they have to go to CCD at their home parish? Seems strange to be in a Catholic school, learn about Communion, and then not make it with the class!

The kids in DS's Catholic school come from all different parishes all over LI (though most belong to the schools parish) and all the kids made their Communion at the school's Church, regardless of where they live and go to Church.

Trish, they have to make their Communion at their home parish. I agree it is strange, but our our Pastor is trying I guess passive aggressively to recruit more parishioners. I don't agree with it.

They do a special mass in conjunction with the May Crowning and Ascencion Thursday where the kids wear their communion outfits to school and all take communion together as a class.

i imagine everyone in my current church makes it together.

but my church on staten island...had to separate it into random sundays...huge fights were breaking out at catering hallsChat Icon

not with my family, we get cake in the backyard...but once the date was released parents would get nasty with each other.

Our parish has communions on Saturdays. The catholic school students have a celebration together and the public kids are divided up the other Saturdays.

Re: As it's Communion season, a question about the ceremony...

We are in a large parish so we have them Saturdays and a few Sundays during May. The children who attend the parochial school have their own Communion services which are not mixed with public school kids. The public school kids Saturday Communions are not during a mass and the Sunday Communions are.

No, I'm talking about my oldest DD--she's in 1st grade now.

Thanks everyone. Seems more do it on Saturday. Funny, I have no memory of any felt banner at mine. Guess I wouldn't care if my kids had it or not then. Chat Icon
