As quarter 4 approaches, who senses layoffs in their company?

My friend who work at fortune 500 was saying that there seems to be a bit of a "mood" of potential layoffs coming before the holidays...especially since many companies have to release their final numbers for the year soon, which i guess effects stockholders.



anyone else feel the vibe?
do you have rumors flying around in your place of employment?

no thank god, I work for a very stable major corporation on the island and we are good to go here.

Although, it has happened. In fact, I was laid off by my current company in 2006, but they asked me back last year. This layoff was bc of restructuring of departments and not finances, so while we are good now and I have no worries, its always in the back of my mind.

I just had to cut two people on Monday and was told there is a chance I'll be asked to select two more in Dec.

This after management, including myself, were given bonuses of $15 -$150k a few months ago.

not me. and I work in banking. we are doing well, although we probably wont get raises, we hopefully will get bonus.

None here. I work for a small company and we're actually hiring. But my DH's company has been laying people off left and right. None from his department as of yet and we're praying it stays that way.

Nope..I work for a large Fortune 500 company and we are actually hiring...right now we are short-staffed because we had a few people leave to go to other companies so for us I don't think thats the case.

I remember rounds of layoffs when I worked for CBS. We had 3 rounds in the fall. I was part of the first round, where they axed EVERYONE above a certain salary. But the last round they actually layed off a husband AND wife, the week before Christmas. I will never forget that. Made me realize my problems meant nothing.

I'm sure there will be cuts in my organization but, we had massive cuts in my office back in the summer. We're pretty lean but, it's always at the back of my head it could happen.

I don't *think* so, but then again... who knows. Let's hope not!

ETA: We had a huge round of cuts in February and then more in the spring.

My company just laid off people this past spring. Who knows what the future holds.

No layoffs, it's very rare that someone is laid off from my company unless a department closes.

I do see cost saving measures like increased contribution for health insurance, change to cheaper office supplies.
But, the cost saving measure that stands out the most is that this year's holiday party is on a Wednesday night.
Never has it been held on any other night than a Friday.

Layoffs all over the place.

I work in the back office side of a very large bank.

They are laying off people, NOT because they are downsizing. Instead the reason is "job elimination"; then they are creating a new position, which is essentially the old postition just tweaked and you have the opportunity to re-apply for your position or you are laid off as of Jan 15th.

They aren't stating how many postitions they have to fill but we all know in my specific department, it's less than the number of people we have now (because they seperated it into 2 sections now). So far more than half of us will be gone as of Jan 15th.

They went about it in a very sneaky, nasty, and all around shady way. It's disturbing. It's terrible to even sit and watch what's going on with this company. Especially having been here 11 years and seeing where it was and now where it's headed; a new company bought the old one a few years ago. I chose to not even reapply. I HATE this company.

They are doing this department by department. Even the maintenance guys went through this.....

The best part is... we received bailout money from the gov't that we didn't even need... and the company is free to turn around and lay off their employees for no reason. It's like double screwing the gov't if you ask me. My company is NOT hurting for money and these layoffs are NOT because they are failing or any reason of the sort.... it's just another evil corporation....

What pisses me off is I asked if I could skip my bonus to save one of them and was told no.

Now I hope to be able to hire one of them as a consultant to keep the work flowing. Silly that we can do this because it doesn't count as headcount.

I'm really annoyed at work this week.

We are a union shop, so we have to get plenty of notice before layoffs (which we've already gotten). The current casualty's last day is next month, but quite a few of us realize that's only the tip of the iceberg, and that after the first of the year 5-7 more people will follow.

No - other than very small, specific situations. Nothing large scale.

Actually planning on adding positions (global company, most new roles are in other US areas) for 2011. At least that's good news!
