and please do not give a pet as a gift unless you are SURE that the recipient wants and can care for one

Thank you for posting this. It is such a tragedy that so many well-behaved, well-trained dogs and cats are in shelters b/c of wide-spread foreclosures.

That is too sad. Its hard for me to even read the entire article.
I could easily become a crazy cat/dog lady, adopting every animal I see. If only dh would let me.

it breaks my heart to read stories like this
we took in a cat this year when her owners lost their apartment
they never came back for her- and I found her an awesome home
My heart broke for her but she is so much better off now

Speaking of this - be sure the recipient is in a financial position that they can handle the responsibilities of having a pet. I have recently become very aware of just how expensive owning a pet can be. If that baby gets ill - the bills will stack up rapidly. We have spent over 2000 on our pup in the last week. We don't have the money to spend - but we can't see putting him to sleep if there is a chance. So we are running up our credit. The Vet told us straight up that most owners he has encountered do opt to put the animal down because of the financial burden that would be created by caring for them if an animal falls ill. Medical crisis is not always something you can predict.
