asking for a friend--what exactly happens at the AFP?
i never had it with #1. i did a search but didn't find the specifics.
she's not being offered an ultrascreen/NT (she's out of state) and is only being offered the AFP. what exactly happens at it? what does it test for? do you do both the NT and AFP?
any info you can give would be wonderful

I did the NT and the AFP. AFP is around 16 weeks and does the same tests as the ultrascreen at 12 weeks, only it includes neural tube defects and gives you a combined percentage for downs and trisomy. You have a higher accuracy rate with a smaller false positive percentage.

That's not entirely true. There is a high false positive rate with the AFP even with combining it with the NT scan.
Both are screening tests. The AFP is a blood test only and it checks for neural tube defects/spina bifida as the NT scan cannot check for that. The AFP combined with a Quad Triple Screen will also include the Down Syndrome portion. They will then take your results from the NT scan and combine them with the AFP/Quad Triple Screen to give you a ratio of the chance of Down Syndrome.

The AFP is a blood test. It checks for neural tube defects and spina bifida (as PP stated). I opted out of the Quad Screen which uses the AFP results because the false positive rate jumps to something like 11%. (For Down's screening, I did the NT/UltraScreen earlier).

I am just relaying what my genetic counselor told me. Of course i'm not a doctor so I wouldn't know 100% the truth.
