Aspartame & other artificial sweeteners

I had been enjoying the occasional Diet Coke and G2 Gatorade but my doc just told me to really try to refrain from all things that contain aspartame, which is pretty much every diet soda I've found. She didn't mention anything about sucralose and some of the other artificial sweeteners, like Splenda (and I forgot to ask). Anyone have any thoughts on sucralose, splenda, etc? I just bought a soda stream and all of the syrups contain sucralose and I wasn't sure if this was ok or not.

TIA!!

I have avoided it all. I am sure some of the girls have it occasionally but from my understanding artificial sweeteners are very bad for you.

Re: Aspartame & other artificial sweeteners

I'm not sure what the experts say, but I personally have stayed away from ALL artificial sweeteners this entire pregnancy. Even before I got pregnant I tried to stay away from aspartame but for some reason, this is the one "rule" I wouldn't break while being pregnant.

My doctor said Surcralose/ Splenda is fine. I have found some diet drinks that contain splenta.. i.e. iced tea mix and minute maid lemondae light, in the carton. Dont know of any soda's that contain it.

I was told to avoid Diet Soda's but if you have it every once in a while, its not the end of the world- I still have 1-2 servings a week, as opposed to 2-3 a day I used to have.

My Dr. said same thing about Splenda so I just make sure I either drink something with Splenda or just regular sugar. I have avoided aspartame if I know its in it

Re: Aspartame & other artificial sweeteners

Being that I have GD and I'm seeing a nutritionist, I was banned from all fake sugar... including splenda, nutrisweet, truvia, etc. Basically all that isn't real sugar is fake sugar. Even if the packaging says natural or something to that effect... doesn't mean it's "natural".. often the process by which it is made is not natural.

Before being diagnosed with GD I did my best to stay away from all fake sugar but wasn't as strict. If I wanted soda I drank regular caffeine free coke rather than diet coke.

Anything ending with ose is a sugar... so sucralose is a sugar, a fake sugar that is. I believe splenda is a form of sucralose or at least sucralose is in splenda.
Sucralose limits should be no more than 9mg per day. Just remember that it's found in A LOT of things... so it can really add up.

IMHO, It's best to try to avoid fake sugar altogether, if you can. The main issue is they are made from chemicals and your body can't totally break it down.

Since I'm diabetic, I would be using artificial sweetners, but since I also have menopausal burning issues, caused by artificial sweetners, among other things, I stick to Splenda. There are a few soft drinks that have Splenda in them, but I can't think of the name of them. Artificial sweetners are on the bladder irritant list.Mary

Thank you all for your input. I think I'm going to try to avoid all sugar substitutes as much as possible. Probably better to indulge in a caffeine free Coke every so often than to have the fake sugars.

Re: Aspartame & other artificial sweeteners

I have diet soda a couple times a week. My doctor said avoid sweet and low and aspartame. He said splenda is okay. I just try to limit it to some diet soda or crystal light a couple times a week.
