Asperger's syndrome

I am looking to see if anyone on LIF knows a lot about this syndrome.
We believe my BIL has this and I am interested in learning more. No one ever diagnosed him...everyone in DH's family just shrugs their shoulders and agrees that he is awkward and unable to socialize normally with others...other signs/symptoms are there as well.
I have a bunch of questions...I am trying to help him. He is a little stubborn though. His sense of reality is a little warped. Please FM me if you have information to share or know a lot about this topic. I am also interested in finding out if this is something DH and I should be concerned with for the future when we have children. Thanks again for your help Chat Icon

Xpost to the Parenting Board. There are several moms that work with children with autism.

Re: Asperger's syndrome

I FM'd you on this. My Uncle (who is in his 50's) has this. He is able to function in society...has a job, goes to church, but is unable to make social relationships.

He also cannot connect two things to an issue/topic/person. For example he ran into the sister of my Uncles wife at church one time. He went up to her and said oh you are Jane, I remember you - we went to the same HS together (which they did). However, he could not connect that she was also the sister of his sister-in-law who he had seen at many family parties. There are a lot of things like that.

I am a special ed teacher and I work with children on the spectrum.....how old is he? What type of behaviors does he exhibit that lead you to believe this?

My cousin's son has it. He's 14 now. I don't see them that often, but I may be able to help.

Re: Asperger's syndrome

Someone that I knew growing up was diagnosed with this later in life, when he was in his early-mid 30s. The diagnosis absolutely makes sense for this person (from my POV, as someone who looked up some info online after I heard he was diagnosed). He does not know how to read people. He is very persistent in seeking friendships with people from the past and people he has just met. He does not seem unhappy at all. He can be obsessive. He is a fan of certain music groups, to the point of obsession. He was very uncoordinated physically when we were kids but he seems to have outgrown that. He knows his diagnosis but I am still not sure he understands why he carries the diagnosis. He probably seems weird but he does not seem unintelligent.

there is no test during pregnancy that can determine autism or other pervasive developmental disabilities, so i would not get too concerned right now. Chat Icon
