well, we videotaped the birth, so I have a lot of the immediate on film. But I was with my daughters in labor and delivery for a good hour after they were born. I held them for a few minutes instantly-they handed her to me umbilical still attached. after a few minutes, they took her, in the same room, to warm her, give her the one shot, ointment in eyes, weigh, hat, swaddle, etc--the basics. dd 2 had a fluid sucked out of her lungs--we have that on video- they stuck a tube down her throat and nose to suction out some fluid. we have dh asking in the background why they are doing that. then she was swaddled, and i held her for a long time, nursed, and had people come visit. my parents had been in the waiting room for dd1. for dd2, they were watching dd1, so we called when she was born, and they came with dd1, and we were still in l&d when they got there and they all came in. eventually i went up to my room, and they took dd to give her a bath, have a pediatrician exam her, and measure her height. then she came back to me, and was with me 99.9% of the time from there. she was gone for the bath and exam for maybe an hour

Both deliveries both DS's were put on my chest rt after I delivered them...honestly giving birth is such a tramatic exp I almost wanted/didn't want the baby on me. I was being sewn back up and it was great to look at my DS and be amazed but I was also in excruciating pain. DS 1 did not nurse rt away, I had him for a good while (at least 1/2 hr maybe 1 hr) until they took him to take his vitals and I transferred to a room and they gave him back. DS 2 nursed rt away both were amazing experiences, however I did feel at some point ok when are they going to take the baby to get bathed...ect b/c it was a bit overwhelming for me.

I just had my third DC less than 2 weeks ago. I delivered at Winthrop and had to have a c/s. The baby was weighed, cord cut, etc. all right there in the OR with me and DH. DH got to hold him for a bit and sat with me while I was being sewed up. The nurse then took the baby and my DH went with them to the recovery area, which was right outside the OR. I am not exactly sure what they did, but DH was there with the baby and the nurse the whole time. It's a new thing - they don't take the baby away to the nursery upstairs. It's with you in the recovery room as soon as you get brought there. This was because of my c/s. I would assume if you had a v-birth, the baby is with you the whole time in the L&D room and goes with you to your room when you are ready.

When I was wheeled into the recovery area, DH was sitting there with DC waiting for me. I got my bed propped up and I BF right away.

I had my DD at LIJ.

Right after she was born, they put her on me while my husband cut the cord. I held her for a min or so, and then they took her and cleaned her, weighed her, measured her, swaddled her all in the same room while they stitched me up. I think they did the APGAR test right there too. The hospital Pediatrician came in and checked her too.

Then they gave her back to me all swaddled up. My husband and I held her. My mom and MIL held her and my father came and held her all in the L&D room. She was probably in there with me for 2 hours or so.

Then they took her to the nursery to change her diaper and give her a bath. Probably gave her the vitamin K shot (or maybe they did that when she was in my room- not sure). They had to give me a catether at that point, so I probably didn't see her for an hour. Once they finally brought me to my room in the maternity ward, I asked for her. I think a total of an hour she was in the nursery.

They take your baby away? I had no idea. Here they don't take your babies away at all, when I had a section my dd was handed to me and I held her in recovery all the way up to the ward. They only take your babies away if you ask them so you can get some rest.

After my DD was born, while I was being stitched they brought DD to the nursery for a bath, to get weighed, her Apgar and to put the eye ointment in. There is a certain time period they need to get the ointment in their eyes....I remember them telling us how long the time frame is in Lamaze...but I can't recall. I think an hour? They also give the baby a Vitamin K Shot. By the time I was done being stitched DH came back in with DD...it didn't take long at all for everything to be done.

Where I had my baby they never took them away. In fact, none of the 3 hospitals I gave birth in even had a nursery! They did everything(weigh, check vitals, first bath, etc..) right there in the room with you. Baby never left my sight.

Me too... I delivered in 2 different hospitals for 3 kids. All of them stayed with me, and were rolled in their bed with me when i moved out of the L&D room.

DS#1 I didn't see for 5hours because he had to go to the NICU because I had a temperature...I guess that would be dangerous for the baby. Understandable...I guess!

DS#2 I saw pretty much right away. They took him did all the testing they needed, bathed him, etc. Once I got to my room I asked the nurse if I could walk to the nursery and get him. She said if you really want to but it might be good to rest. I walked and got him so I had him in my room within minutes of getting there.

IMO I think they do it for you because labor could be long and they want you to rest BUT if you really want the baby you have the option to have them.

Crashing here. I'll be delivering at SB in a few weeks. They are implementing a new program where they do not take the baby away at all. It is currently in place weekdays and they are working toward doing it all the time.

I think the baby is bathed, admitted, and there are some vitals they monitor a few times over those few hours they would typically take the baby. Instead, a nursery nurse is coming to you to take care of this. They said they wheel you to postpartum with the baby on your lap and if all goes well, the baby never leaves mom once he/she is born.
