I was told 3 years old is the best time for a first visit. We have a very patient and kind dentist in Smithtown, if you're interested.

My son went for the first time when he was about 3 1/2, and my daughter went for the first time when she was almost 3.
We use a dentist in Lindenhurst, the dentist and his staff have always been great with the kids!

Aw! How cute are they, I can totally picture it!! Mine takes his brushing seriously too. They had a pediatric dentist come to the school for a presentation a few weeks ago and I was told he was enthralled - he certainly came home jabbering away about it.

I guess I took him kind of late - 4 yrs. I plan on taking my DD in the next month or two, she's almost 3. She likes brushing but doesn't get the importance like the 4 1/2 yr old does.

ETA: Where do you live? There's a ped dentist in Massapequa that everyone raves over. I took my DS to our regular dentist though and it was a great experience for him, thank goodness. Ped dentists are expensive and we get next to nothing back from our dental plan.

We just took my son yesturday for his first time he is 3 and had no interest he wouldnt open his mouth so we are bringing him back in 6 months when we all go. The dentist saud start at 3 and then just keep trying every 6 months so thats what we are doing.

Re: At what age do you take DC to the dentist?

I work with kids only in a pedo dental office. these are the guildelines
your first child - should bring in by age 1- to show you how to take care of teeth and see how the enamel is forming and the dentist looks for other things too

the ideal age is 2 !
by that age most of the teeth are in with the exception of maybe the last 4 molars. at this age it is important to see how your child and you are brushing and taking care of the teeth, also to see if any habits of pacifier/grinding and if cavities are present. yes MANY children come in at age 2 with a TON of soft plaque and hard plaque at this age and have a TON of cavities in their molars that they will have till they are 11-12 yrs of age. If the cavities are caught early intervention is minor. At this stage too we get to see how the teeth are developing as well as the jaw. How the occlusion is, contacts- all very important at an early age. We also go over nutrition- this is VERY important, most parents dont realize what they are feeding/drinking and even chewy vitamins are doing to their childrens teeth.
If your child is scared at the dr.s or really bad- behavior wise then I would wait till 3 but otherwise thier first dental visit should be at 2.
a yr can make a HUGE difference. Personally I cant tell you how many times I had to use the cavitron- the instrument that sprays water on your teeth on 2 and 3 yr old first visits b/c the plaque was hard and covered the entire tooth on the back sides of the teeth. most moms are afraid or the child compains that it hurts when they brush so they brush too softly not removing the plaque properly or some moms dont even brush DC teeth, they let them do it themselves and they cant, their mechanical skills just cant get all the teeth.

You can bring them to your dentist but know that General dentist do not do tx on children. so you may want to start them with a pedodontist so that you dont have to make the switch. Cleanings they can do and sealants b/c the hygienist does that but the dentist cant do fillings/pulpotomys or any tx on children. they have to refer your DC to a pedodontist.
I HTH.

I have worked/tempted in over a dozen GP offices and not one has treated children under the age of 10. But if yours does, thats great!!!! Most GP dentists dont have the training or patience. Children are very difficult, their attention span and patience are limited. A good kid can turn into a non compliant kid when it comes to fillings. That is usually when the GP refers out.

Re: At what age do you take DC to the dentist?

I work in a general practice that treats children. We do pulpotomys/fillings/sealants. We like to see our patients around 3 yrs of age. We will only send our children to a specialist if they are *very* tough to work on, which is rare. I would check with your current general practice to see if they are geared towards working on kids, if not than a pedodontist is your best bet. I give our expectant and new moms a lecture on bottle rot, brushing their babies teeth, fluoride use and limiting sugar. So usually by the time they come in the childs teeth are in good shape.
