At what point do you move to IVF?

When does a doctor say..IUIs aren't the answer and move on toward IVF?

Just wondering what everyone's experience was. Thanks

Re: At what point do you move to IVF?

I think that's really up to you and your RE.

We skipped right over Clomid - but I know some people like to try each method for 2-3 months.

We had done 1 injectables/IUI cycle and planned on doing 1-2 more before moving IVF. Obviously it didn't work out that way, but that was our plan.

IVF is a big deal... I wouldn't jump right into that without trying a few IUIs first (unless of course there were circumstances where you'd need to go right to IVF).

I understand it's a big deal just wondering if I am wasting my time with IUIs..

There's no simple answer, KWIM?

Had insurance/other circumstances not been an issue, we probably would have done 2 Clomid + IUI cycles, 2-3 injetables + IUI cycles, and then moved onto IVF.

To be honest, we probably can't afford to do another fresh IVF cycle.. it's a big financial commitment!

IUIs and Clomid work for some people. What is your diagnosis again?

No real diagnosis...Some PCOS symptoms but other than that it's unexplained IF..and DH is fine

Sounds like us - kind of.

I'd definitely try Clomid + IUI at least 1-2 more times, then injectables 2-3 times before doing IVF.

The pregnancy rates for injectables + IUI are pretty good for someone with unexplained IF (20-25%). You have just give it a chance...

I know we all want to get pregnant right away, but you have to give each method a chance. Each cycle they are finding out new things about how your body responds to the different medications, and they'll better understand where to go from there... KWIM?

Re: At what point do you move to IVF?

We are dealing with unexplained IF (though I did have a uterine polyp removed).

I have undergone 3 Clomid/IUI cycles and this cycle I did injectables with IUI.

If this cycle is unsuccessful, we are taking next cycle off because we will be out of the country and unable to monitor, and will probably only do 1 more injectable/IUI cycle before moving onto IVF.

My doctor supports our decision and this is in line with what he recommends. We could do 2 more injectable/IUI, but I think we are only going to do 1 more.

Re: At what point do you move to IVF?

We did 2 unmedicated IUI cycles before moving to IVF. This was because we were only male factor and his counts were so low that IUI would never work for us. It's very individual as to what treatment plan you choose and what will work. I would try the IUI's first before jumping into IVF. It's always a good strating point and a lot of times they can figure things out while you go along and can tweak you treatment accordingly.

Re: At what point do you move to IVF?

I actually never had IUI's. I wasnt responding to clomid and then when we found out about Dh's sperm issues too, my RE thought it best to move right to IVF. He was afraid I would produce too many follies on injectables because of my age and chances are hubby's sperm and my "hostile" CM would still give us a very slim chance.

Re: At what point do you move to IVF?

We did 2 failed IUI's & both times DH's sample was not optimal. After the second one, my RE suggested going to IVF since it would bypass our Male factor. I went home & discussed it with DH & we made the consult appt that evening.

Re: At what point do you move to IVF?

We did one IUI cycle with injectables before moving to IVF. For us, we had PCOS going on with me and severe MF with DH. So, the $600 I paid for IUI was a waste of $ but I at least wanted to try. We had to do ICSI (where they inject the sperm into the egg)...so you can imagine that IUI was just pointless (for us).

Re: At what point do you move to IVF?

My doc recommended that, if we didn't get pregnant by our 4th injectable IUI, that we should consider IVF.. which is exactly what we did.

Re: At what point do you move to IVF?

I did 4 cycles in a row with Clomid/IUI. The last one was killing my estrogen level so Dr. Cain recommended going straight to IVF b/c we had to do injectables and we also wanted to do PGD testing if possible.

Re: At what point do you move to IVF?

I did a bunch of IUIs and had chemicals because of a genetic issue. So I did 2 IVFs, but now I'm back on IUIs.

Re: At what point do you move to IVF?

I've been diagnosed with PCOS, although even though I have "signs" of it, I'm not 100% convinced I have it. We were doing IUI's until we found out we were dealing with MF as well, once we moved to the RE. IUI's were pretty pointless for us. So we made the choice to move right over to IVFs.

I had done 6 months of Clomid and 5 IUI's.

Re: At what point do you move to IVF?

I would say it definately depends on a few factors, both diagnosis wise, financial and individual RE's protocol overall...

When we were trying for my DS, the RE said he would do 3-4 IUI/Clomid before moving onto either injectables
( which he really did not want to do because of fear of over-response due to my PCOS (mild) or IVF...We conceived my DS on IUI /Clomid #3...

With this pg. , since I did conceive with IUI once, we tried for 6 cycles ( one was canceled due to no response) and we ended up moving onto IVF after IUI not being successful...We too have no male factor, and I have a mild case of PCOS, no other diagnosis...Chat Icon

I had 5 failed IUI's (1 natural, 2 on Clomid, and 2 on injections). For me, I was not willing to subject my body to any more treatments without increasing my odds. I got PG on the first IVF attempt! HTH! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: At what point do you move to IVF?

I'm diagnosed with unexplained and and moved to IVF after doing 3 unmedicated IUIs, 3 Clomid IUIs, and 2 injectable IUIs and an exploratory laparoscopy. We weren't covered at all for IVF so we wanted to exhaust all other options first. If I were covered I probably would have moved on to IVF a little sooner.

Re: At what point do you move to IVF?

We did 6 IUIs and moved onto IVF this cycle.

My RE had suggested we move on after 4 IUIs, but my insurance stipulates that they will pay for IVF after 6 failed IUIs. So, 6 it was...

6 was a lot though and I was really ready to move on.

BTW, I am not complaining. DH and I know how fortunate we are to have the insurance coverage we do.Chat Icon

Re: At what point do you move to IVF?

I had one canceled clomid cycle and one failed injectible/iui cycle. My RE said I would be a really good candidate for IVF and would not let me do injectibles without doing ivf due to several residual cysts..

I just had my first transfer doneChat Icon
