At what point do you say go the EFF to sleep?

DD is 3+ and is in her own bed but needs me to be in her bed until she falls asleep. Normally, it's fine. There are some nights here and there that are tough. But generally, it's going ok.

Tonight I had to stay out late and got home at 8:30. Both kids were up and sooooo happy to see me! Great. Until they started to fight about whose bed I went in. Tried to appease both and said let's go to my bed.

But nooooo....dd didn't want to sleep with ds. Ds didn't know how to fall asleep in my bed. DD told me that DS peed in the shower. DS can't sleep in my bed. DD doesn't want to go to school tomorrow. DS doesn't know how to asnwer a question on his homework. DD wants to get a new bathtub.

Finally, DS goes into his own bed and I bring DD to her. NOw it's 9:15. She starts falling asleep but as soon as I move, she wakes up. Now she wants a new bathtub and bathroom. Get her to drift off. She's asleep. But I go to move and that's it...she's awake again.

Now it's 10 and she's still awake. I"M EXHAUSTED!!!! I left the house at 6 this morning and barely had dinner and I'm done!!! I can't. I have nothing in me. But she can't sleep alone (her words) and now she's crying because I just want to go eat a bowl of cereal.

At what point do you just say, fine, cry?

I know she's young and at this point, she is just over tired. But I'm so.damn.tired!

Wow you are incredibly patient!!! I tell my kids to cut the crap and lay down and go to sleep pretty much as soon as they start up with all that nonsense. We do last call for potty & it’s lights out... you’d better stay in your bed & I don’t want to hear you. Some initial whining, fussing some nights but it’s over fast & they lay there until they fall asleep. They are 5, 3, and 1.

mine are 4 and 7 and nope!! when they start up with that, its "goodnight. don't come out". I'm with at least the younger one ALL day (SAHM) and then running around with the older ones activities once he gets home from school... so by 8/8:30, i am tired of hearing their voices LOL and i actually tell them that, too! HAHAHA even if my younger one does come out (usually looking for a stuffed animal or something...) i stay on the couch, make him get whatever it is he's looking for and I just don't feed into it. he gets it and goes right back into his bed. Sleep isn't something i mess around with! it affects everything else, and we all need to get enough of it.

Yeah I don’t even start with bedtime games. I say go the f to sleep from the start. Only thing that changes is when he is sick.

All this! I need some kid free time at night. They get books, songs, cuddles and then I'm out. If they fight me on it I get creative on consequences. If you don't stay in bed quietly, no tv tomorrow/ no play date tomorrow/ no activity tomorrow/ I'm moving you to separate bedrooms, etc. My kids are almost 4 and 6.5 and they're pretty receptive but they've also been through this drill forever.

Re: At what point do you say go the EFF to sleep?

It's a little different for me because DD (2.5) is still in her crib so she's confined (hasn't figured out how to escape! Chat Icon) but I'm afraid that will change come January when she gets her big girl bed. Usually she goes down pretty easily but some nights she wants me to hold her, to go potty, to read another book, etc. I allow one potty (she still wears a pull up at night anyway) and one snuggle and then that's it, I'm done. If you're not asleep by 8:30, I'm going to my own bed. Sometimes I leave the door open to her room so we can "talk" room to room (ours is across the hall) and I guess she feels not so alone then. But by 8:30 I'm starting to doze in the recliner and NO THANK YOU to that.

I agree with this. I’m not a very patient and I’m trying to be better but bedtime is bedtime unless they are sick.... I need my alone time without them to decompress and I need to get to bed early since I have early risers. I don’t mess around at night and I don’t have a problem doing CIO

Haha I got this book at my baby shower. I had it in her bookcase all these years because she couldn't read. The other day she came to dh and asked what "fu**" said. Lol it's now out of her room.

Same. We used to let her scream her head off in the crib when she was around 2. Scream bloody murder until she went to sleep.
She learned really fast

YUP -- this is one thing that doesnt fly in my house. Unless you are sick you are sleeping in your own bed and im not sitting with you all night. Books, cuddles, and bedtime. Peace out.

I have no patience at bedtime. I wake up at 4:15 to go to the gym so by 8pm, I am done.

DS went through a rough period around age 3 when we transitioned him to a toddler bed. I was firm and put him back into bed. If he kept getting out, I’d let him whine at the top of the stairs, but I wouldn’t engage him. Now at 4, he’ll usually have one post goodnight request (water, kiss, etc). After that, I will not entertain any request and he knows that. This took over a month of consistent behavior from me.

Me too. Bedtime is bedtime and we don't lay with either of the kids either. It's lights out and that's that. We read a book in our bed all together and then everyone goes to their own rooms.

I’m on the flexible part of this.
I have a recliner and sit. Put all kids to bed at same time in same room. Tell a story. Talk about best part of each of their days. Then I tell them all to be quiet or I leave. They fall asleep within 5 minutes. 3 kids (3-8 years old).

Re: At what point do you say go the EFF to sleep?

I only go into dd1s room to put her into bed, tuck her in, and pick out a book. Everything else is done in the living room. She will try to call me in or come out but I’ll entertain to a minimum - no extra attention and a firm voice. I just tell her to get back into bed. My dh says when I’m not home she doesn’t come out at all.

Dd2 is still in a crib and lives to fall asleep for now.
