At What Point would you STOP traveling "far"?
And when I say far, I mean more then an hour or two from your hospital/family/doctor?
I live in Suffolk and I have a few friends who invited me up to Conn. in April just for the day...I would be taking the Orient Point ferry...but at the point I would be 35 weeks and I feel a little uncomfortable being far away enough that it would take me a long time to get back home, god forbid I went into labor. Its about a 2 1/2 hour ride, car plus ferry to CT.
Was there a point in your pregnancy where you will/would keep it close to home?
TIA !

If you feel uncomfortable, then I wouldn't go.
I personally have not given it much thought as I really do not travel like that much anyway. The furthest I would be when it gets close is on Fire Island but I'd have DH and our boat so we can shoot right home in a jiffy!

I'll be traveling about 9 hours from home at around 35 weeks. But if I recall, I believe most doctors would recommend that you not travel long distances after 36 weeks. And flying is earlier.

This is probably the best advice.
My doctor is comfortable with me traveling up until 36 weeks. I'll be flying to Florida for a week when I'm 32 weeks. It's all about your comfort level.

Re: At What Point would you STOP traveling "far"?
My doc told me not to fly in my third trimester. I have to travel for my job so that means alot more driving. I have a trip to MA scheduled for 36 weeks and PA for 37 weeks. My doctor seems to be ok with this(my DH is freaking ). But as my dr says just take it easy. Maybe stop off every hour or two as needed and get out and stretch and move around. Besides. I can't see traveling more than 2 hours without needing to pee.

I definately would play it by ear. I am planning my last big trip (7.5 hr car drive, 45 min flight) when I am just 30 weeks. But at 35 weeks, you will be seeing your OB weekly, so I would just make the decision that week.

I live in CT and had planned to spend Thanksgiving weekend with my family on LI (2.5 hours away). I was almost 36 weeks at that point. Unfortunately, I was put on bedrest the day before the trip. You should do what makes you feel comfortable.

I'm spending my 35th week in Cape May, which is 3 hours away.

Re: At What Point would you STOP traveling "far"?
I think it depends on how you feel.
At 30 weeks, I was heading to Cape Cod on a ferry.
I don't think 1-2 hours is that far away. I would have stopped a car ride over 2 hours around 37 weeks only because it's uncomfortable to sit. I may have done it if my DH was there to drive.
With my first I commuted 1.5 hours by train up until my labor. First labors are on average about 14-16 hours. Plenty of time to get there if you're not the one driving.
