At your level 2, do they measure cervix, check placenta, etc?

Can anyone tell me what they check at the level 2 sono? Do they measure your cervix, check placenta, or just check baby?

They check EVERYTHING. The technician has to get like 40 different pictures of everything, including the cervix, placenta, the umbilical cord, the 4 chambers of the heart, each foot, each hand, the face, the nose, the neck, the head...it goes on and on.

They check the cervix and placenta from the exterior? Thanks Neener. Chat Icon

Yes, they check it on the sonogram...there should be no internal exam.

They checked my placenta but didn't check my cervix. I had to go for a follow up 2 weeks later and I told the u/s doctor that I was worried about my cervix length (because of the LEEP). He was unaware of this and measured my cervix at that time and said he will check it about every 4wks.

Don't be shy and ask questions. I think you mentioned before that you had a LEEP too. Just mention it to the tech so they're aware of it.

Thank you!

I didn't have a leep. I have fibroids that I was told could pose an issue b/c they are close to the cervix. I have repeatedly asked my dr about this, he hasn't checked them yet so they are worrying me. They told me this at my 12 week sono. 2 mths have gone by and no one has checked...so that's why I asked this.

I think if there is a previous problem with your cervix or placenta, or if they see something potentially wrong with either during the exterior, then they do the internal. For me, I had the first part of an anatomy scan at 16 weeks. The tech saw I had an anterior placenta, so wanted to do an internal to make sure it was high enough. She did, and I had a previa, so at 20 weeks, they were automatically doing the internal.

As soon as the sono tech sees the fibroids- I can guarantee they'll do measurements for your chart. Be prepared though- even if you ask questions, by law, a tech is not supposed to give out diagnostic info. That said, I HAVE had some techs give me the measurements of my fibroids, while others said, "You're dr. will go over it all with you."

What if the dr there comes in though? Would that dr be able to talk to me? My dr didn't go over anything with me last time, and I have been extremely frustrated about this. May even go see another dr b/c I don't like that I am not getting an answer on the situation.

You may be right, thank you. I hope someone will check my cervix, it has been on my mind (probably needlessly but I need someone to verify this!).

I think you really need to sit down with your doc and explain your concerns. Explain that the previous doctor seemed concerned about the positioning of the fibroids. Also be honest about your feelings that your concerns are being brushed aside.

Also, because of how much the uterus grows, you'd be AMAZED at how much the positioning of the fibroids changes. Perhaps thats why your doctor isn't concerned (yet). S/He may be wanting to wait until you are further along before making decisions regarding complications/delivery options.

BTW, I think checking the cervix is commonplace during the Level II/anatomy scans.

Oh Porrrus, we have done this. Both DH and myself. I have asked him about them at at least 3 visits. You can't even imagine how clear we made ourselves. He is well aware we became concerned when the tech did the ultrascreen. Yet he's not concerned and says he didn't need to "see the fibroids". I asked "How will we know if they become an issue?" His answer was "when you have pain". But yet, that doesn't make me feel any better about my cervix. Maybe the cervix has nothing to do with it, but yet he isn't saying that when I ask him that either. Maybe he knows what he is talking about, but it just doesn't correlate with what the ultrasound dr at the high risk clinic said. And we have directly said this and still, no sono done by him.

I can't understand why this is when the sono doctor said they need to be monitored and brought up the cervix.

That's why I am extremely frustrated and am ready to find another dr.

They checked my cervix through internal ultrasound. It was 5.8(average is 3-3.5) you have no idea how this relieved us. My Dr said my chance of pre term labor went from 50% to 30%.

I know this has been a concern for you. I would suggest you or your husband call and ask to speak with the Dr. Tell him that you insist on having your cervix checked or you will be seeking other medical care. You really need to put your foot down and DEMAND it or seek a new Dr with the understanding up front that he will check your cervix every 2-4 weeks. Good luck!

My plan is see what they do at the level 2 next week. See if they can or will check it, since their clinic is what said it needed to be checked anyway. If they do it and it's normal, maybe he was right and it didn't need to be checked and I am being overly paranoid.

But either way, I have plans to meet with another dr and possibly switch after my level 2. I just am not happy that I can't seem to get a straight answer on this. Mel, we sat there with teh dr, and DH and I repeatedly asked "so you don't need to SEE or measure the cervix?" He said no. I want to trust him, maybe he knows but I also believe any dr is capable of being too passive about some things...so that's why I think I may just go for second opinion and if I like them, switch. Yet I really don't know if I am wrong and the dr is right about what I need/don't need. Chat Icon

My sono tech checked my cervix and placenta at my Level II. I know this for sure b/c I asked. Since my BFF had a short cervix and needed strict bedrest, I wanted to make sure I was ok. I also had a few colposcopies over the years and always worried about a weakened cervix. Thankfully, all is well with both for me! Chat Icon

Thanks for posting this. My MIL and SIL are planning to come with me since DH can't get out of work that day (we were already tentatively told the sex anyways). Is it okay for them to be there during this exam?

I just don't see why he would not...ya know? It is so stupid. It took my tech all of 3 minutes. If you are wrong..so what. If you are right, it will be the best 3 minutes ever spent.

My level II didn't take that long. As long as the baby is in a good position to get pictures, I guess. I think mine was around 15 or 20 minutes.

The sono tech did note my fibroids (I have two). I waited until my next appointment to ask the doctor about them, and she told me the measurements and reassured me that they are not a problem, yet.

They checked everything - cervix and placenta included. For my 20 week they did both and external AND internal sonogram.

Mrs Flatbread and 08BabySurprise,

was it routine for them to do the internal to check the cervix or did they see something that warranted further checking?

Thanks
