Attached house and neighbors food
We bought our 1st house about 6 months ago. We are in Queens and the house is attached on both sides. We love the house but the neighbors on one side cook using very pungent spices every day and the smell is somehow leaking into our house. It is very strong and although I am a fan of this type of food I don't want to smell it 24/7. Any suggestions? I've already tried sprays, boiling vinegar, boiling cinnamon & cloves. None of these help. We can't really open the windows to air it out...not until spring at least. I know that when you live in an attached house there are some neighbor issues you have to just live with. Just wondering if anyone has any tips I can try.

Re: Attached house and neighbors food
maybe the attached wall can be thickened with new sheetrock to seal up any possible areas its getting through? Also do you have an attic or basement area? Are they well insulated from the attached wall?
I don't think the smell is coming through the wall, I think its finding some tiny space to leak through. If you can figure out what it is & seal it off I think your problem will be solved.

Re: Attached house and neighbors food
I feel your pain, sometimes my whole neighborhood smells like a certain food do you have a relationship w/ them? can you ask them to use the fan over the stove so the smell doesn't permeate your wall?

Re: Attached house and neighbors food
we had a situation like this in the last apartment we rented. it was just awful. nothing we did even made a dent in the odor.
these neighbors were just terrible people to live around for many other reasons though (including blasting very loud ethnic music at all hours of the night)
we moved!
(not a desirable solution when you own the home though!)

Re: Attached house and neighbors food
We live in a townhouse and we have the same problem. I know that it comes from the attic in our case, but it doesn't help the matter. I don't have advice but I can just commiserate.

Have you tried burning candles? I heard this helps with odors.

Re: Attached house and neighbors food
Get yourself a good oil burner and oils from either The Body Shop or Yankee Candle. They are very strong and work well!!

I think you are right...we need to find the holes/cracks and fill them up. It seems to be coming from the basement. I think they probably have a kitchen in their basement like we do. Anyway...thanks everyone for the tips!

Re: Attached house and neighbors food
Have you tried an exhaust fan either thru your window or in your attic? It should remove any odors in your home.

i'm going to have to go with everyone on this about "not much you can do". i use to live in queens but we moved (not b/c of this).
we had the same situation with the attached house and if the smell your talking about is curry (i can't think of anything else ethnic that has a STRONG smell) then you are out of luck. i like curry but my then neighbors use to use it a lot. it made my apartment smell and eventually after they moved out my apartment still smelled like it. honestly, i never mindly too too much b/c it was an apartment but if i had to live there forever i'd probably wouldn't be too happy.
ps: i don't think getting new sheetrock or sealing up holes will help. my apartmnt has not holes and no attic and i think honestly it "seeps" through the wall.
good luck
