A Wright of passage: From 'GL' to 'GH'

In a stunning one-two punch, Laura Wright has quit "Guiding Light" (where she played Cassie for eight years) to jump ship to "General Hospital" and assume the coveted role of Carly Corinthos.
"Honestly, I did it for the opportunity," says Wright. "I love what I do, but I don't know if I was doing the character of Cassie justice anymore. When you start to feel like you want to be challenged in other areas, the light starts to dim a little."

No pun intended.

Wright initially turned down "GH's" offer out of loyalty to "GL" and fear of uprooting her family from New York to Los Angeles, where "GH" tapes. But after careful consideration, she changed her mind, telling "GL" she was leaving at the 11th hour and forcing them to do an emergency recast.

"I asked them to tell me [who's up for Cassie] and they laughed at me," she says. "I would be good at it: 'Oh, she'd be perfect. She wouldn't be.' I do that whenever they screen-test people. I say, 'Do you want to know who I think?' They're like, 'Go away, Laura.'"

Wright has only positive things to say about the people at "GL."

"This was the hardest decision I've ever had to make," she says. "I adore everyone at 'GL.' It's bittersweet because I love my cast, but I've got to go. Kim Zimmer [Reva] said to me, 'We've all left! We've all done it!' I just feel so attached."

Now, Wright must become attached to a new character, one who has been played by three actresses. The most recent, Jennifer Bransford, was just let go.

"I've got big shoes to fill," Wright says. "Sarah Brown was awesome. I loved watching her play the role. Tamara Braun brought amazing emotion and sensitivity to the role. I think she really did a great job. She was a little tougher than Sarah, but soft, too. I'm hoping to be somewhere down the middle."

Wright starts taping in mid-October and should start airing in mid-November.

"I really am so thrilled to play this character," she says. "I said to the writers, 'I could never have handled this role eight years ago, personally, emotionally or professionally.' I was 27. Now, I feel somewhat confident that I have the ability. Just give me the opportunity and I'll show you.

"Kelly Ripa and I used to always say, 'Just give us the part and we'll blow your mind,'" the actress says, referring to the early '90s, when she played Ally on "Loving" and "The City," across the hall from her pal Ripa, who was Hayley on "All My Children."

"But if you make us audition," she recalls with a laugh, "we may ****."

That's an interesting choice.

I liked her in Loving and The City.

I like her, but I still think that she is not going to make a great replacement for Carly- I just don't see it . . . .

I agree. Especially since I think she resembles Courtney too much and that will just be annoying

there was a picture I tried to post that almost looked exactly like Courtney! Kinda scary!

I haven't seen the show in a while but I still like the first Carly best (Sarah Brown).

She looks just like Courtney!!!! But I love the first day when a new person starts and they say, "Carly will now be played by so and so..."

I don't know if she will be a good Carly or not...well then again, she has to be better than the one that is leaving the show.
