Attn: MrsFresca, Jacquie, KimH-- CAPE MAY INFO
Since all of you FM'd me.. I figured I would just post so everyone can easily see.
We have been going down there for about 4 years-- we LOVE it. The whole town is a historical landmark as it was a Victorian seaside resort town. The homes are absolutely beautiful and the beach and the board walk are just so relaxing.
Our first time down there we stayed at the John F. Craig house. It was very nice-- but it is very typical B&B-- uncomfortable conversations with people you don't know and you feel like you are staying out late and disturbing people when you come in. While we had considered staying there again-- we preferred something with a little more privacy.
We moved to staying at the Carroll Villa. We like this location a lot more- and it has all the charm of a B&B but it is a small hotel. They have a restaurant downstairs called the Mad Batter and you get free breakfast downstairs each morning. We liked this better since we didn't have to share a table with strangers and we also liked that we could order whatever we wanted.
A couple of weeks ago we stayed at the Virginia. We have eaten at the Ebbitt Room several times-- which is the BEST restauarant in Cape May IMO. The rooms here are more expensive but since we were there in Jan, it was more affordable. The rooms here-- and beautiful. Very 20's art deco, with modern bathrooms. We loved it- we would consider staying there whenever we go back, but the same room we spent $175 on in Jan, would cost $350 during the high season in the summer. We actually got all of our parents gift certs to the Virginia as wedding gifts-- the place is beautiful and the Ebbit Room is amazing. This is right next door to the Carroll Villa btw.
I have also heard the Southern Mansion is very nice-- but $$.
Places to eat.. - As mentioned-- we LOVE the Ebbit Room. I am a vegetarian and they have always made me a superb meal on the fly. Also good places: - The Washington Inn- fine dining - Frescas- upscale italian - 420 Bank Street- supposed to be very good, but they don't have food for me- right next door to Frescas - Blue Pig for breakfast or lunch-- this is in Congress Hall - Mad Batter for breakfast or lunch- breakfast is free if you stay at Carroll Villa and you get like a 20% off food voucher for another meal if you stay there - Merion Inn is nice for the atmo-- I would go for a drink before and listen to the piano player- food was eh.
Things to do... - Twinings Tea Room-- I love high tea-- for those that remember, I did high tea for my bridal shower... This is a MUST. Finger sandwiches, pastries, the PISTACHIO bread is delish, and I always bring sotme home with me. This is on the Physick estate- which I recommend a tour of as well. - Walking through Washington Mall. This is where the shops are-- some are good, some are not. We still manage to spend money every time we go. - I would also do a trolly tour-- we did this our first time down there-- it was nice to get a tour of the town and see some of the oldest homes. - Walk through the shops at Congress Hall - Cape May Day Spa-- DH and I got a couples massage when we were there a couple of weeks ago-- very nice experience
After dinner every time we are there-- we head to Cabanas. It is a very large bar with fun cover bands. Also Carney's is fun next door, but it depends on the band-- carney's feels like more of a pick-up joint and is a lot more crowded.
Depending on when you go- they will have street fairs and craft fairs, etc. When the weather is warm- you hang out on the beach or walk on the board walk. It is a relaxing, beautiful place.
Let me know if you have more q's.. I never got tired of talking about it-- DH and I so want to be able to buy a place down there and go down all the time!
Check out CapeMay.com. All of the places I mentioned should be on there and every place has a web site that you can find on there.
