Autistic child area?
I was driving to work today and saw a new sign that read this, and I didn't know quite what to make of it.
Has anyone ever seen one of these signs before? I obviously know what it means, but what exactly should I expect from this sign? Maybe it's just me, but I was completely bewildered by it and wondered if it should even be up.

I saw the same kind of signs while I was driving around looking at houses. I have never seen that type of sign before either

I have seen it before in Levittown. I think you are just supposed to be more alert, because the kid could run into the street.

Re: Autistic child area?
Does it say, "AUTISTIC CHILD"?
That would really pi$$ me off because it should be: CHILDREN WITH AUTISM.
The disability does NOT define the child. PERSON FIRST LANGUAGE!!! This drives me nuts...

Re: Autistic child area?
It says "Autistic Child Area," just like the signs that say “Deaf Child Area” and “Blind Child Area.”
Here's an article about it.

I teach children on the PDD spectrum and we do our best to put the child before the disability when speaking of our clients or even in paperwork. Many of our students exhibit impulsive behaviors and do run away from us or even walk out the building.
However, in this case, the sign is technically referring to the area and not the child. For the purpose of the child's safety, to have a sign that reads...
"CHILDREN WITH AUTISM AREA" or "AREA FOR CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS"
...takes a bit more processing for motorists. I understand the logic for using as few words as possible. I think the issue of safety is paramount over the issue of political correctness in this case.

I have the same pet peeve.
The purpose of the sign is probably just to alert drivers to be a little more careful, because the child may run out into the street, as some children with autism do not have an awareness of danger.

Re: Autistic child area?
i think it's a great sign... Children with autism can sometimes be unaware of their surroundings and can easily walk right into a road without noticing a car coming.

Re: Autistic child area?
I was HAPPY to read your post. Although I do not have an autistic child, I do have a multiply-handicapped special needs child. I have tried for the past year to petition my town to post a sign for my son. We live on a fairly busy road and the motorists fly by ... not even stopping at the stop signs. When we are out in front of our house with my children, I put my bright yellow man holding the orange flag (I'm sure most Mom's know what I'm talking about), out by the street. Sometimes ... not always ... this will alert motorists to children and they will slow down. However, most people just continue to speed by. I wish I could get a sign put up saying "Child with Disabilities" or something along those lines to alert people to my son. To be honest ... anything would help. Unfortunately, it just doesn't seem to be a priority to the legislators where I live. I applaud any town that is alerting people to special needs children. These special children ... and their parents ... need all the help they can get.
