Average LI taxes
Im trying to figure out what is truly the norm for what people are paying in taxes. We had an opportunity at a house with $18K taxes which I thought is crazy but DH seems to think this is close to the norm which he assumes is ~$15K

I would think the average is 12. 18 seems high to me

Average LI taxes
It depends on the area. Taxes where I am are relatively low, ~$10-15k.
The areas where we want to move it is difficult to find a house with taxes lower than $20k.

I just bought a house with a built in pool and the taxes are about 12K - which includes the taxes for the village I am located in. It's not a huge piece of property, but big enough to have the pool, patio and grass area. I thought that was pretty reasonable. To me $18K is definitely on the high side, but it definitely depends on where you are looking

Re: Average LI taxes
That's hard to answer. They vary so much. Maybe $18K is the norm for the town you're looking in.

Re: Average LI taxes
Depends on the size of house , lot, schools.
I hate when my parents complain about their taxes. I tell her, well you have a bigger house and bigger lot size. Then I hear well we do not have kids in the schools anymore why do we have to pay school taxes? I tell her if people in your age bracket do not want to pay it then sell and move somewhere else.
I agree, taxes are a little too high but I keep telling myself once the youngest is out of HS we consider looking elsewhere!

I think $10-14 is average and is pretty much what people I know including myself pay in taxes in Nassau County. $18K is really high but it may be in line with the town you are looking in and the style of house.

we are in western nassau, close to queens. Taxes on our 2 bedroom 2 bath cape were 12k when we bought 4 years ago, and they are now 8500 with the STAR reduction and after grieving for the last 3 years.

Re: Average LI taxes
It depends upon the price of the home. I would think $10-12k is average. In NJ the people I know with $18k in taxes have $1M homes.

Average LI taxes
I'd say 10-12K.
I've seen low 7's to high teens for one town alone in western suffolk.

It really depends on area. I pay about $8500 in Holbrook. 3000 SF home on a 100x100 lot. Several years ago my mom was paying that on a standard, unexpanded Levitt cape with a lot half the size.

Re: Average LI taxes
I agree that it's hard to generalize the entirety of Long Island. There are some estates on the North Shore of Nassau that have taxes of $50K plus! And there are areas that are known to have lower taxes and smaller homes (under $10K). New construction in even an area like North Bellmore means taxes in the $25K range.
Assuming that you are talking about an average home in a middle class LI neighborhood on a typical (60 by 100) lot, then I'd say $11K to $15K is the "norm." Under $10K on LI is GREAT. Over $15K you are probably talking about a larger house with many improvements or a larger lot or waterfront or maybe a house where the taxes haven't been grieved in many years.

Re: Average LI taxes
Without hoa fees, we are just under 10K. I love a house around the corner from us but the taxes are 21k which makes the house out of our price range.
