Awkward, hug or handshake moment
I hate these moments.
Coworker that has worked at the company for 6 years was just fired today - came around to say his goodbyes.
He came around to my office, walked around to the back of my desk, and kind of opened his arms - put out his right arm more than his left.
I just got up, and gave him a hug and said goodbyes. Now, replaying it in my mind, maybe his right arm was out more than the other because he was just going for the shake, but not the hug? But why would he come all the way around to the side of my desk then if he could just handshake over the desk? I hate these type of on the spot awkward things.
Now he thinks I'm some crazy woman who goes around hugging people.

Oooo I hate those moments. But I think a hug would have been an ok response.
I once said hi to a friend, and thinking he was going in for the cheek kiss with a hug, I gave a little peck but ended up kissing his neck. He was just going for the hug. Thats why I hate kissing and hugging people (who aren't family) hello and goodbye.

I know, that is making it all OK for me. Plus the fact that I think he is in so much shock that he's not realizing much right now.
It's just in my messed up, over analyzed mind....

I over analyze everything too. And I HATE those kind of awkward moments. But they pass quickly.... I think you were ok in the hug btw

I hate those awkward moments too. When you think they are just going to shake, you start to put your hand out, but then pull it back in when they go for the hug.

I'm a big hugger by nature so it would be expected of me I wouldn't overthink your actions. I was a nice gesture and probably appreciated.

Re: Awkward, hug or handshake moment
Ugh, that has most definitely happened to me before! Stinky situation but I bet you he's probably thinking in my head "wow, she was such a nice coworker and I enjoyed working with her" all because you ended it on a good note with a instead of a shake!
edited to add:
and maybe he was going for the hug and would have been insulted if only you did a shake!

Re: Awkward, hug or handshake moment
After 6 years I think a hug is AOK! Don't overthink it. Lots of people prefer hugs over handshakes

That's like the episode in Friends when Jennifer Anniston hugs the guy she interviews with! So funny!!!
In this situation, I don't think you were wrong in hugging this person. And like someone else mentioned, it's not like you're going to see him again!

Eh, he just got fired. He could probably use a hug anyway.
