Awning in the backyard...
I had this when I lived in Spain, and now we want to take down the roof over our deck and have an awning installed. Can anyone recommend any places? We actually do not want it motorized.
This will save us $$ on taxes, and allow sun to enter the house during the winter. I like them so much better than a roof!
TIA

Re: Awning in the backyard...
I want to do this too but we won't be ready to do the backyard until next year. I've done more than enough this year.

Re: Awning in the backyard...
karacg,
I just went through a pretty extensive review of many awnings, retractable and fixed. In the end I decided to wait until next year to purchase a retractable. I currently have a fixed wood awning and I have problems with carpenter bee’s and yellow jacks nesting in the wood and under the roof. I looked into an aluminum awning via this site, http://www.awnings-patiocovers.com. This got expensive due to the guidelines one had to adhere to for wind and snow loads. I went back to looking at retractable awnings. I reviewed http://www.sunsetter.com, www.awningstar.com/ and www.rollupawnings.com/ , in this order to name a few. With SunSetter I was quickly discouraged due to the quality. I narrowed my decision to www.rollupawnings.com/ because they offered an awning with a fully enclosed tubular housing. However, Rollup did discourage me a bit because I spoke to three different reps that not only provided different costs but they pitched different approaches. In the end the cost of the awning was in the high $3,000 dollar range. After reviewing many different awning manufactures I learned that a good awning will cost $2,500 or more. Due to other obligations I decided to wait until next year.
Do your homework because there’s a lot to learn.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Re: Awning in the backyard...
Thanks jerome I will check them all out. I had a great awning in my house in Spain. It was on pulleys and so simple. Hope I can get something like that...

Re: Awning in the backyard...
No problem.
I was told stay away from the wimpy arms and those with chain links because they tend to have problems. That is the major difference between the cheaper vs. the more expensive. Also those awnings with the protective covers tend to attract birds that nest in them which are why the fully enclosed tubular awning by Rollup is appealing. It fully protects the cloth during the off season and there are no nooks for the birds to nest in.
Good Luck!
