Arizona is experiencing a teacher shortage. State legislators have come up with a solution to have uncertified people with subject matter knowledge teach without going through certification pathways or formal training and without having to take a proficiency exam. Interestingly enough, House Republican leader John Allen remarked that AZ teachers (some of the lowest paid of any state) are getting second jobs to buy boats.

Twenty (!!) years ago when I began teaching in NYC I was living alone & needed a second job- I waitressed on the weekend and when the place closed I worked as a Saturday receptionist in a realtor's office. I made so much money I was able to buy TWO boats!  
Actually, I was able to make student loan payments and have some cash on hand because my first monthly paycheck went nearly all to pay my rent.
