Babbling and Talking

What is the correlation (if any) between babbling and talking? Is a child who babbles a lot likely to be a big talker? Or do they have nothing to do with one another?

My guess would be the babbler is the one that speaks sooner.

I think the talkers are based more on personality than anything else. Babblers IMO have an earlier desire to socialize. Good theory...could beChat Icon

Re: Babbling and Talking

If there is limited babbling and limited sounds being produced it may indicate an expressive language delay or possibly some type or oral motor issue, but on the flip side studies haven't really shown a correlation between babbling and talking. Some late talkers have limited babbling, but other late talkers have babbling that is equivalent to their normally developing peers.

Brendan didn't start babbling with consonants until he was 9.5 months old and as a speech pathologist I obsess over this stuff Chat Icon. Still normal, but some babies certainly start babbling much earlier. Up until then he only made vowel sounds. Well, he just turned one and he already has a handful of words he can say and about 20 signs that he uses. Every child is so individual it's really hard to say how they will develop. Think about this, are early walkers more likely to be soccer stars? I don't know. Chat Icon At any rate, babbling is a great thing! Chat Icon

I was wondering the same thing. Luka babbles all day long and he is so expresive when he does it and I swear he "talk's" to you like you are talking to him. It cracks me up.
