Babies in Movie Theatres
This was in Newsday letters:

I went to the movies with a friend. We are both "older" women and were looking forward to relaxing and laughing. When we got into the theater, we found only two other people, a woman and her baby in a stroller.
In tandem, we turned around and asked for the manager. We were informed that babies are allowed in the theater, and we then asked for our money back. We had no wish whatsoever to share our fun afternoon with a restless, crying baby. What was this mother thinking?
In fact, what are so many parents thinking when they bring their babies to adult movies, allow their children to sit in the seats in front of the bus reserved for the elderly and disabled, and in general ignore behavior that is disruptive and destroys any chance for pleasurable outings for others?

I don't know how I feel about the woman's response but I don't think I would bring a baby to a movie-I would think the noises, sound effects, sudden music, etc would be unsettling for a little one.

ITA too. I'm pregnant with my first, but I think it's a stretch to say moms can't go out until their kids are older. We can get a babysitter. Just like I don't like adults chattering away in the movies, I wouldn't want to hear a baby crying.

ITA as well.
I know it bothers me now and I dont see it changing once my baby is here and i will not take my infant to a movie , unless its a kids movie or a Moms night where kids are welcome ( which movie theaters have)....
I will get a babysitter or not go , its not fair to the other people...
Actually I should say I have no issue with the baby being there, its if they start to talk, cry, yell etc, and a parent does not GET up and leave that I have the issue with.
If my husband started yelling in a theater, he would be asked to leave, so why not a baby? They dont know any better, thats understood, but the Parent does.......
Although that lady in the letter sounds crabby yes

Yeah and when the lady starts blabbing with her friend a mile a minute while I am listening to the movie what should I do then? tell her to leave? C'mon now...people that write letters about nonsense have too much time on their hands. Just think those precious moments she was writing could have been those few minutes should could have caught another "baby free" movie.

I've never been to a movie where I saw a baby. I dont think its right either if the child is crying up a storm, but if the baby is sleeping and is quiet through out the whole movie, well then it wouldn't bother me at all.

I have taken both my kids to the movies when they were infants. I would never take them on a weekend. I usually go when it's the first show during the week. Of course, as soon as they start making noise, DH/myself walk right out the theatre to settle him down. I would never continue to stay in the theatre if it would disrupt others. That's just inconsiderate!

I wouldnt want to take my infants because I wouldnt enjoy the movie, because I would be too wooried that they would make too much noise

I would NOT bring my daughter to a movie - it'd be no fun for me, her, or the people around us (unless she was sleeping, but I can't guarantee that!)

Ok, while I wouldn't bring Ava to a movie, I don't see anything wrong with it so long as it's not at a busy time. I'm going to refer to the same thing I referred to in the restaurant debate: What if this woman had PPD and going to the movies was her only sanity-saving moments of the day? You never know, and I think that moms are expected to stay home when they have infants, and that's not fair.

I wouldn't take Nicholas to a movie but because I know he wouldn't stay still... and I don't find anything wrong if a mom wants to take her baby to a movie. That woman sounds a little bitter for me.

I admit, I use to walk by a theatre daily on our walks. For the 4.50 mantinee price, I was always tempted to go to a movie. There are a ton I want to see that DH has no interest in.
I would never sit there with a whining baby, as long as he's on my lap he is content. But the noise level always makes me nervous.

I know that a lot of theaters have a special morning during the week where moms bring their kids, strollers, etc and the lights are just dimmed and the sound is turned down a bit. I contemplated taking DD, but I'm waiting for a good movie to be scheduled first.

I also think babies shouldnt be at movie theaters - unless you know your baby very well and know that he/she will sleep or be quiet during the movie... same with nice restaurants. If they are quiet and can behave, then great - if not, then I dont need to hear a screaming crying baby if I go out. I can stay at home and hear that alll day!!!

i wouldn't bring a baby to a movie theatre either but i certainly wouldn't mind if someone else did!! i'm sure if that baby started being noisy and crying, the mother would bring her/ him outside to calm him down!
should we ban them from librarys too?

I was gonna bring my older kids to see Shrek the third today and I would have brought the baby but we didnt have enough time today
I agree not to bring a baby to an adult movie but I think its fine at a kids movie

Oh yes! Baby Flix. I remember thinking about that a year ago but I never went... I wish I did. Now it wouldn't be possible with my active baby!

I just did this on Tuesday and it was wonderful- they kept the lights sort of on., sound was not loud and they had a changing table in the theatre too. It was great- DD was so well-behaved and I really enjoyed seeing my first movie in months. I have to admit, it was the quietest movie I ever went to- no one cried, no one was talking, and no cell phones went off. I had stopped going to the movies due to rude people who talk on their phone during a show

But this lady didnt write that the baby was crying. She wrote that she walked into the theater saw the baby and complained. To be honest, i would have given her money back and let her be on her way. She sounds like a PITA customer anyway.
