Babies that have chromosomal abnormalities
Can/should they be able to detect it before the actual miscarriage? Lets say if the Dr sent you for bloodwork starting at week 4...would the HCG levels/progest. levels have been off? Would the pregnancy symptoms have been off? Or would you just carry like any other child with great #s and then the baby abort itself due to these issues? I guess I am just trying to figure out if a chromosomal abnormality is detectable at all?

Re: Babies that have chromosomal abnormalities
i think they only way to tell is by doing an amnio...
HCG will only tell you that its viable up to that point... anything can happen after that as far as m/c are concerned

Re: Babies that have chromosomal abnormalities
Early sonograms can tell. For me there was a heartbeat but it wasn't anywhere near what a normal rate would be.

Re: Babies that have chromosomal abnormalities
My 1st mc I had a normal hb for 12 weeks and then it stopped. Everything was fine on the sono. 2nd mc the heartbeat was very slow and eventually stopped. Both times the only way they could detect the abnormalities were bc of testing.

Re: Babies that have chromosomal abnormalities
i dont know if an irregular hb is a chromosomal abnormality or not...
i think the only sono that detects that stuff would be the NT Scan

Re: Babies that have chromosomal abnormalities
The NT scan in my experience is 100% correct- I had the scan at 11 Weeks- baby A had no hearbeat( previous sono- very strong) - measured at over 10 weeks- baby B had a fold of 8.1 and lost her at 13 weeks- Down syndrome was confirmed for baby B- baby A- we were not able to test.
next one had NT scan had a fold of 5.1- strong heatbeat- anmio confirmed downs girl again-- delivered at 20 Weeks

Yep. My first sono showed a small, abnormally shaped sac.

Re: Babies that have chromosomal abnormalities
I had a Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) test done after having an abnormal NT Scan. This test can be done much earlier then an amnio but gives the same results. I think it can be done between 10 and 14 weeks. Its when they take cells from the placenta and test them. I think the only thing that it doesn't detect but an amino will is spina bifid.

For me, I had a perfect sono at 7 wks. Sac looked good, great heartbeat. At 10 wks, there was no hb.
The only way we knew a genetic abnormality was because of the testing done at the d&c. My doc said the testing could show the baby was fine or an abnormality (as it turned out to be). There was no way to know until we got the results back.

Re: Babies that have chromosomal abnormalities
My old neighbor had what one would call the perfect pregnancy. All tests great, bloodwork, great, level 2 great. Delivered vag birth, great experience. Her ds was born with downs. No tests picked up on it, no bloodwork, nothing. It was a complete surprise to everyone, drs included. So, i dont know.
