Baby Born to 10 year old in Spain
This is crazy!
Baby born to 10-year-old girl in Spain
Wed, Nov. 3, 2010 (HealthDay News) -- A baby born to a 10-year-old girl in southern Spain is in good health, but officials are deciding whether to allow the mother and her family to retain custody of the newborn.
The father of the baby, born last week in the city of Jerez de la Frontera, is also a minor, said Micaela Navarro, the social affairs minister in Andalusia, the Associated Press reported.
The mother of the baby is of Romanian origin, according to Spanish newspapers. Medical personnel who attended the girl said her mother told them that giving birth at such a young age is common in their country, the daily Diario de Jerez reported.
Because they're still growing, young girls are at higher risk for problems during pregnancy, according to medical experts, the AP reported.

Re: Baby Born to 10 year old in Spain
yea... so common??
that's why we hear about it often???
this is the first time I've heard of a 10 yr old giving birth.
And that mother seems more than OK with it. just because of this factor, I just might find myself on the side of the officials....
Just disturbing! beyond disturbing actually.

That's really sad. A 10 year old should be enjoying being a child, not a mother.

Re: Baby Born to 10 year old in Spain
Just FYI: Spain is still, as a society, completely prejudiced against Gypsies. As in, when I lived there the people I lived with would call the cops if they saw a Gypsy walking down the street. Calling the girl "Romanian" implies to me that she's a Gypsy and this really feels like a propaganda piece against them. That's specifically why the piece (which is probably just translated from a Spanish wire story) mentions that she's specifically Romanian and says that it's "common." They're implying that it's common for Gypsies and feeding into the hate / fear that exists towards them already.

You are most likely right, I studied this in college. Gypsy life is very secretive and some customs hair raising. I have been to Spain numerous times and the Spanish do not like them at all.

I spent every summer of the first 15 years of my life in a village with a very large Gypsy settlement. If this girl is a Gypsy I am not at all surprised that her giving birth at 10 is not an out of the ordinary occurrence. Their customs and ways ARE complitely different from a "regular" way of life. "Hair raising' is actually a pretty good way to describe some of the things that go on in their households... Let's just say the girls start their passage into womanhood very young. Most of them are mature, full developed, and in many cases quite breathtaking looking women who turn into old hags by mid 30s just from their lifestyle alone... Completely different society, very secretive and protective of their medieval ways...
Wow, all of a sudden I am flooded with memories from my childhood...
