Baby Can't Fall Asleep on her Own?

DD is 5 weeks, and CANNOT fall asleep on her own. She never has (actually, maybe once a day she does right after I BF her, she passes out, but that's it). Has this happened to anyone else?

She's fussy, so we use the "Happiest Baby on the Block" techniques which really do help. But, she literally cannot fall asleep on her own...we have to be holding her and actively rocking/bouncing/patting her for her to fall asleep. She won't fall asleep in the bouncer, swing, bassinet, anywhere, even if she's exhausted. If she's in a sound sleep, we can transfer her to the swing or bassinet and she'll maybe stay asleep for 30 minutes.

Has anyone's baby been like this? Any advice/tips? Or do we just have to wait it out? Thanks!

I'm with you! Bella won't go down unless she passes out from BFing or if we're rocking her, walking her and bouncing her... etc.

Oh no, and you've had many more weeks of it than us Chat Icon Does she sleep on her own at night? DD does not and will not...she must sleep on me in the living room chair or she doesn't sleep, no matter how tired or overtired she is Chat Icon

ETA: SHe also doesn't like being on her own during the day either...she wants to be held 24/7. She'll tolerate some time under her mobile or on her playmat, but that's it. Is Bella like this too?

Re: Baby Can't Fall Asleep on her Own?

You mentioned Happiest Baby- so I'm assuming you're swaddling? I find that after I swaddle DD she struggles and fusses a little, but then falls right to sleep (within 10 minutes). We only figured that out when she was 5 weeks. Before that, as soon as she fussed, I was unwrapping her thinking she didn't like it.

Now- she goes to sleep on her own like a champ (7weeks- and still swaddled).

Do you keep the white noise on when you put her down on her own? I find that to be key in DD staying asleep out of my arms (that and being swaddled).

Have you tried the miracle blanket?

My son sleeps fine during the night, but when he wakes back up, after his bottle, he tossed so much, and had such a disruptive sleep. I bought the miracle blanket, and this sounds cliche, but it REALLY is a miracle. He is so cozy in it.

Cailen is the same way - he won't even fall asleep in my arms though. It must either be a swing, his stroller in motion, car seat, or someone rocking him in his bouncy. And he is almost 18 weeks!!! Chat Icon

Re: Baby Can't Fall Asleep on her Own?

Thanks for all the replies ladies. Yes, we do keep her swaddled and keep the white noise on, and they definitely calm her (she'd have a tough time calming down without both of these), but if we calmed her while she was swaddled & with the white noise on, and tried to lay her in the bassinet awake but when she's sleepy, she just gets fussy again...she won't fall asleep on her own. It definitely gets exhausting Chat Icon But thank you for all the suggestions, at least we're doing what "should" be working, maybe it will start to soon!

No, we don't have this, but I have read lots of raves on it. We may have to get this. It's like a super-swaddler,right?

Re: Baby Can't Fall Asleep on her Own?

Have you tried letting her fuss a bit on her own? This is a very personal decision I suppose, but when we let DD fuss (NOT crying) for about 5 minutes, usually she goes to sleep. If she starts to cry, she's immediately picked up.

YEs, she HAS to be held all day and mostly by me. She won't tolerate anyone else. Guess cuz I'm with her all the time. She will sleep on her own throughout the night. In the beginning however, she was sleeping on my chest. Probably for the 1st month. Then I was like "This is enough..." Now she gets swaddles in the MIRACLE blanket and she immediately goes down for the count. But... initially, you've got to get her started by rocking her to sleep.

Re: Baby Can't Fall Asleep on her Own?

My son had to be rocked to sleep for like the first 3 months. I was so afraid of starting bad habits, but as he became more scheduled (which I was and still am strict about) I was able to rock him for a few minutes and then put him down awake. Now at 9 months, when it's time for a nap or bedtime, I hold him close for a minute and then put him down with his monkey. I will admit that if we're out and about, I do have to walk/rock him to sleep. But that's just when we're out of the house.

She's so young, I wouldn't worry yet. She is going to mature and develop so much every week. Do what works for now and re-evaluate if nothing has changed when she hits four months.

I agree with this. My dd is 9 wks and is the same way - she needs to be swaddled, binked and rocked in the bouncy seat before falling asleep. We're not yet worrying about it but hopefully as she gets older she'll be able to fall asleep on her own.

THe miracle blanket is awesome though, we use it everyday!

Paige is was and kinda still like your DD. She is 6 months now and up until like 4 1/2 months we had to rock her to sleep EVERY night. Finally, when it got close to the time when we could try CIO we did (for naps). the first time we put her down for her nap she cried like 12 minutes. She still doesnt nap well for us (at grandma's she naps awesome). But at night she usually falls alseep to the bottle. there are some nights when she doesnt fall alseep and we put her down awake and she fusses for a little and then she falls asleep.

Your DD will eventually be able to fall asleep on her own. It just may take time. When she is old enough to try CIO, then try it. Until then, i would still rock her. I was so worried that I was creating such a bad habit but the older she got the better she falls asleep. She sleeps from 7-730 till 530 (i wish she would sleep later).

I defintely recommend you try putting her down earlier. Paige cannot make it past 7 sometimes. She gets soooo cranky.

Paige also needs to be stimulated. She does not tolerate being by herself at all. She gets bored all the time and she has been like that since day 1. She is still like that. I cant help in that department. its very tiring. Just give it time it wll get better.
