Baby Dedication?
For those of you who are Protestant and had a baby dedication... Did you have a party after? OR Did family just go out to dinner? I am trying to figure out what to do. TIA
eta: Did you sent out formal invites? Our family is Catholic or was raised Catholic and DH & I are not. Everyone is "expecting" a big party after the dedication. I have no problem with that, I just want it to be different from a Christening because it is not the same thing. Any ideas? TIA

Re: Baby Dedication?
My cousin is Protestant and having a baby dedication next month.
After she is having a small BBQ at her home ( I believe this is also mostly b/c we have family coming from NY to pennslyvania for the day/weekend for this)
She also sent out informal invitations - again I think mostly b/c it would have been to expensive to call everyone. But I would do invitations.. nothing crazy but something

Re: Baby Dedication?
I just ordered invites and have the same issue - fyi - I was also raised Catholic but DH and I are not so everyone expects the traditional Catholic thing - we are having it out bc my father-in-law knows the owner of the place but if he didn't we were going to do a small dinner or bbq
on our invitations we wrote: Christopher and Kari joyfully invite you to celebrate love and new life as they dedicate Karissa Grace to God

Re: Baby Dedication?
I just received an invitation for a dedication and 1st birthday celebration ( for the same child)... Now I know what a dedication is for ( I 'm Jewish never heard of a dedication before) .. I thought it meant christening..
Thanks...
By the way it was a formal invitation on it it says:
We're joyfully brininging our little girl into the Love of God's Family..
We invite you to the Dedication and 1st Birthday Celebration for.....
side note: What do I give for a gift ? For a 1st birthday, I usually give clothes or a toy but since there is this dedication is money best?????

A baby dedication is a little different from a Christening. Catholics (I was rasied Catholic) believe that they should baptize a baby soon after birth because it erases original sin and then if the baby died, the baby would go to heaven and not be in "limbo". The Catholic church has since changed that doctrine a few years ago. They used to believe that the baby would be in limbo if it died. Now, Catholics do a christrening based on tradition not to erase original sin because the Vatican changed the doctrine.
However, most Protestants believe you should be baptized as an adult. Protestants have always believed that all babies would go to heaven if they died. Therefore we dedicate our baby to God by agreeing to raise the child to believe in Jesus (to be raised as a Christian).
To answer your side note, I would give money, a few shares of stock, or a savings bond. HTH
eta: thanks for the ideas of how to word the invites. I appreciate it!
