baby on the way in a one bedroom condo

My hubby and I planned to get pregnant knowing that we only have a one bedroom condo. Now expecting our baby girl in June, I am wondering where is everything going to go? I do not have the excitement of decorating a nursery, since all 3 of us will be in our bedroom. Anyone else on here have this small dilemma?

In south florida where we live, our homes are not selling and are losing value at the moment so we cant even sell our place. :(

Re: baby on the way in a one bedroom condo

yep! we're in a 1 BR apartment...

we're putting a crib and changing table in our bedroom... that's it. we're also trying to keep all the tons of baby stuff to a minimum.

1 pack and play
1 bouncer
1 highchair
1 boppy pillow
1 stroller
1 carseat

that's it. no extra stuff.

don't think of it as if you're missing out on decorating just becuase you don't have tons of space. It will still be exciting and special... I actually like the idea of the crib being in our room. It will make reaching for baby much easier. also, there's no need for baby monitors Chat Icon

Re: baby on the way in a one bedroom condo

I will be in a one bedroom when we finally get PG. I am not worried. We will move about a year after the baby comes. But before that... It will have to work. We have a little alcove over by the window that can fit the crib and HOPEFULLY the changing table. Then we will put a curtain up to separate it and paint that section baby colors. We will put up tiebacks so the curtain can stay open at first. I really kind of like the idea.

yep!! know exactly how u feel! we have a 2 bedroom house and a 7 yr old daughter who is excited about a baby but NOT interested in sharing her bedroom with a newborn.. the baby will sleep in the room with us till we move.. there is a chance we will have a new place before the baby is born, but we won't be moving into it till after the baby is born because the new place is out of state..

it all works out.. when i had my daughter (the 7yr old) i still lived at home with my mom and she and I both were in the room i grew up in.. she slept in a bassinet next to my bed..

I have a one bedroom apartment and although the baby's not here yet I think it will work out fine. I have pics of the nursery/bedroom in my album. I basically took out all of my furniture to put the baby furniture in the bedroom. I left us with the closet and 2 tall thin dressers that arent pictured. It's tight but good enough. I have a small bassinet/pack and play instead of the regular size so I could fit a swing also. The kitchen is the only thing i'll have issues with...I think i'll have to buy some kind of cabinet for the babys stuff...I don't have alot of cabinet space. It will work out!!!

DH and i have a two bedroom now but will be moving before the baby arrives. we are looking for affordability over comfort and have no problem giving the baby his or her own corner of our bedroom (like DMarieK).

We have a similar setup as well. We have the crib in our bedroom. Instead of a changing table, I got a really tall Gothic Cabinet Craft armoire which I use to store all baby things - it has drawers, shelves and a clothes hanging section. We change our DS on the bed using a changing pad. He's 4 mos old.

I use the drawers for his clothes. Shelves for storing extra items such as bottles, formula, diaper genie refills.
In the hanging clothes section, I actually use that to hide away the stroller since I have no room for the stroller anywhere else.

We keep the pack and play in the LR and a foldable rocking chair for the baby. On the weekends, we put the pack and play away so it opens up the living room a bit more.

Sorry for writing so much but just wanted to post in case this gives you ideas. Chat Icon

We had a one bedroom co-op when our son was born. Believe me, you will find the room for everything! I felt the same as you...not having a room to decorate. But his/her space will still be wonderful!!Chat Icon

Re: baby on the way in a one bedroom condo

I am currently living in a one bedroom co op with twin boys that are 6 months old. I wont lie and say it isnt tight but we are making due for now. What we did was since our living room was big we put up book cases to "make" a room. I have 2 cribs and one dresser in there. We decided on bookcases so it gave us the extra storage.

Re: baby on the way in a one bedroom condo

we too are in a 1 bedroom! Hopefully for only a few more months!

Luckily we have 2 storage areas where the majority of the stuff we don't use often is stored. Now we have baby stuff in there too (items that she will not be using for a while)

I have done the best I can with organizing the small space, without buying all new furniture (since I want to do that when we get into the house. So, the biggest thing that bothers me is I did not get to enjoy the fun in decorating her nursery. But again, hopefully soon I can do that!

Re: baby on the way in a one bedroom condo

I live in a one bedroom with a small den.

Looks like we’re moving our living room in the smallest room in the house (still haven’t figured this out) and make a nursery out of the living room (which mind you is only large enough for a loveseat NOW).

Where’s stuff gonna go…? Thankfully we have an attic but still I think it’s time for an upgrade to a home or one kick butt garage sale!

We aren’t even planning on buying stuff unless we have to. So a crib and rocker (for the baby) and that’s about it for now. BARE minimum. I don’t want to buy anything until I know I need it.

It’s not like my kid is going to say at 15….
“Yeah, I gotta tell ya, I had it rough. My parents didn’t even paint my nursey, CAN YOU IMAGINE THAT! I mean couldn’t they have least gotten me cool matching sheets? No, they went cheap. God I hate them for that! They even rocked me themselves, I didn’t have any cool toys and gadgets the other kids in day care had in their homes, HOW EMBARASSING it was for me!”

Edit for spelling

Re: baby on the way in a one bedroom condo

I live in a very small 2 bedroom house and one of the bedrooms has three beds in it [a bunk bed with a trundle] for DH's kids when they stay over every other weekend. There is zero space to put a crib in that room. I hear ya about not having the excitement of decorating a nursery, but like the other ladies said, it will be just fine having the baby in our room! I would keep the furniture down to a minimum- maybe just crib and a dresser/changing table. When I get depressed about out lack of space or start freaking out about money... I say to myself- people raised bunches of kids in the Depression!! We'll muttle thru!! Good luck! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: baby on the way in a one bedroom condo

I, too, live in a 1BR.

I posted a question a little while ago along the same lines- how to save space!

Another tip that I don't think I read from PPs is: store things that the baby won't need RIGHT away someplace else (ie- my mom's house). We put the convertible/toddler carseat there and other toys that aren't for newborns.

I'm actually quite surprised at the responses, I didn't think so many of us are in the same (small) boat!

Check out this picture from IKEA -- it's like the 5th room design on their slide, but it's a parent/baby room combo and it's super cute!!

I am in the same boat. I registered for everything and will keep stuff at various family member's houses until they are needed.
