Baby Shower Dilemma... Suggestions (Long)
Ok most of my LIW 09'ers know I currently live in Atlanta.... My entire family and circle of friends live in NYC...
My mom/DS/SIL are throwing us a baby shower in NYC... I'm very appreciative since this is our first child but my dilemma is bringing everything to ATL and spending extra $$ on shipping.. So I agreed with the baby shower and ASKED to please keep the costs at a minimal because its right before the holidays... I'm SUPER happy we are having it at my mothers place because I originally didnt want a Baby Shower. I'm very concious of expenses and our families have done soo much for us in the past year; wedding and all. I told my mother we will buy everything ourself not to worry about a BBShower. My dad was upset that I didn't want to celebrate with the family so I have no choice than to make everyone happy and we were traveling to NYC for the holidays anyway.
Now how on earth are we going to ship everything to ATL? Not to mention we are having a baby shower in ATL (thrown by DH's cousins) and we offered to help.  How can I get the cost of shipping down on the items we are getting from our families and friends in NYC. 
I love my family because they are soo excited about this celebration but... ahhhhh!  WWYD?

Do you ever drive to NY or do your parents drive to Atlanta? I would just take as many of the things that I need now, and take the rest during the next trip (or have the parents bring them down if they are going to make a trip!). That's what we did with my bridal shower when I was living in Ohio.

We also drove when we had an out of state shower for our wedding. It was a long drive (TX), but we had about 2 weeks to do it all. If you will be up for awhile during the holidays maybe drive?

crashing... my friend lives in boston and had an NY shower. I just assumed she wouldn't want to take it back so I ordered from her registry and shipped it right to her house. she was VERY grateful.
maybe they can say something on the invite along the lines that you'd prefer it shipped to your home address.

My FIL is coming down in late February but I'm assuming most of the things I will need before his arrival. Unless someone else decides to drive down.
The trip to NYC will kill me!  I did it once and I don't think I will ever do it again. I fly all the time!

I lived in Charleston SC at the time of my shower. We drove(we had a Jeep Cherokee at the time) and put everything we could in the car. Most people knew i lived OOS so they had stuff sent to my house prior or gave us gift cards.

I say encourage Gift Cards or having the items shipped to your home. Let them include a picture of what they sent you or what they would like you to buy with their gift card in their Shower card for you. (Obviously you will have to have your mom/sister/m-i-l let people know that's what you would prefer.) Just a thought to help out with minimizing the lugging of all your wonderful and appreciated gifts back out of state.

When I planned my sisters shower..she was living in florida and her shower was in NY. I put a little card in the invitation with a cute saying (which i forget) basically saying please help them out and have stuff shipped to either the store by them or one of their friend's house. It worked out great...everyone just put pictures in a card. She was able to carry all the little stuff on the plane with her. Hope this helps

Hi....the majority of my family live in Las Vegas. My parents live in Vegas. The shower was thrown by my mom and cousins.
My mother told them if they wanted a specific item to be bought, then to have it shipped to me before the shower and then include a picture of what they got me in the card when I opened it at the shower. Most of my family members got me gift cards to Babies R Us, Toys R Us, Target and Walmart. She told them it would come in handy when I went back to NY. Even if it was for diapers since they are so expensive.
I live here in Long Island where most of my friends and DH familiy lives so I am having another shower here.
But it was so much better to have gift cards. I did get some clothes at the shower but It was easy to stuff them in my luggage.
I had 2 bridal showers almost 3 and a half years ago. I still have stuff in las Vegas that I have not brought over to NY. It would be too expensive to ship since they are heavy items. Me and my mom learned our lesson so that is why we had my family give gift cards.

I knew someone who was in FL and had a shower in NY for the family.
It was put on the invites that due to her traveling they would ask any registry items be purchased and sent to them or gift cards would be appreciated
In a case like that, I thought it made a lot of sense and I brought a few outfits for the baby and a GC to BRU for the mom to be. Everyone else tended to do the same.

I was in a similar situation for my bridal shower, and luckily most of our gifts were from BBB. After my shower we returned 95% of my gifts at the store and the store pulled them for me in the store near our home. We picked them up when we got home. Saved us $$$$$$ in shipping costs and let me still open all of the gifts at my shower.

Thank you ladies.. I will let them know to encourage ppl to ship to my home (I didn't think most ppl wanted to do so; people like to show up with a gift. My brother is buying the crib and dresser I know they will be shipping it to our home. But some family members will not be going online so all we can do is suggest.

Wow thats great! Lets see next month what happens. Hopefully we get gift cards and most people ship to my home when they see our registry. Definitely my family will ship the big things to my home. I'm starting to get excited about the day!!

I would make it a gift card shower or just small things like clothes. That way you can buy everything when you get home and everyone can still buy you a gift. I hope it all works out for you!!
