Re: baby sign language
i never did it. a friend of mine in school learning to be a doctor told me if a child learns to sign, it may delay speech development later on. she said that if a child knows you understand them without talking, then why would they need to speak? it sort of made sense to me so i never did it. but then again i have friends that swore by it. everyone is different.

Re: baby sign language
My cousin did this with her three sons and I have to say it was so amazing to see.
She got the video - Signing Time with Alex and Lea. It was great to watch, and the songs were so much fun - I still sing them in my head to this day!

This couldn't be further from the truth. In fact, it facilitates faster language learning as it helps a child communicate at an earlier age.
In typically developing children, they will naturally use the *easiest*, most effective method of communication. Before they can speak, using gestures and signs are more effective at getting their needs met rather than just straight crying. Once they are able to use their voice and mouth muscles to create speech, they will naturally transition to using words rather than signing.
"Signing with your Baby" is a great program to use.

Re: baby sign language
We did the sign language and it was truly, truly amazing. At her peak, she had about 30 signs. It helped tremendously with the crying and tantrums because before she could "speak" she could communicate with us to tell us exactly what she wanted. And, she hasn't had any delays in actual speech.
Her daycare brought in a sign language teacher for a class 3 days a week so I don't have any books or cd's to recommend.

I have friends that have used it and found they were using less verbal communication. I see both side to it, being that I do have a speeech background. I am choosing NOT to use it with my boys.

Are you a speech pathologist too ( I am)
ETA: If its presented the right way, the child will not rely on sign language once they are able to imitate verbally/ make attempts to produce words. My son did all signs first, then signs +words, now just words with the occasional sign for "more" if I am ignoring his verbal demand for say...more cookies.
