Baby Slings Warning in Daily News Today

Baby slings - those cuddly carriers that allow parents to keep their infants strapped close to their chest - may not be as safe as they look.

In fact, they’ll soon be the subject of a government safety warning because infants carried in this way can potentially be suffocated, and several have, according to the Associated Press.

Now the Consumer Product Safety Commission is preparing to issue a warning about the slings that may go public before the end of the week.

“We know of too many deaths in these slings, and we now know the hazard scenarios for very small babies,” Inez Tenenbaum, head of the Consumer Product Safety Commission, said, according to the AP. “So, the time has come to alert parents and caregivers.”

Although no particular sling was singled out, complaints have surfaced in the past couple of years about some baby carriers. Consumer Reports expressed concerns about soft fabric slings back in 2008, describing two dozen serious injuries that occurred when babies tumbled out of them.

One Consumer Reports complaint focused on Infantino’s Sling Rider, a “bag-style” sling that cradles the baby in a curved position. Safety advocates frown on this “C-like” hold because it can cause a young baby’s head to flop forward and restrict the baby’s breathing ability.

Additionally, a baby could turn toward a parent’s chest or belly while in the carrier and actually smother. Although the Slingrider was recalled in 2007 due to problems with the plastic sliders on the strap, there have been no recalls because of a suffocation risk, the AP said.

I never used a sling or infant carrier with DS #1 but I tried it with DS #2 twice and hated it. I always felt like he was going to suffocate when he was facing me. He would bury his face into my chest.

I have the infantino swing, in the box. Was going to use it for the first time yesterday... glad I didn't!
I saw this on the news after I chose not to use the sling for my walk, and gave a huge sigh of relief.
Thanks for posting this.

We've been wearing our Children from Birth and beyond with no issues... As with anything else people need to use common sense.

Agree, I loved our sling when he was small enough to be in it.

I used my sling once. I just didn't feel comfortable with DS in it. I felt like it was squishing him and like I was going to drop him getting him out.

We do use our Baby Bjorn-type carrier all the time now and DS loves it.

Same here. You have to have the correct positioning for it to work and be safe

Completely agree. And in every sling I've seen there are specific instructions on how to position the baby so that their chin isn't resting directly on their chest. Although I do see how using a bag-style sling, like the infantino, where the baby isn't as close to you could pose a hazard.

It's the "bag-style" ones that are dangerous. Ring slings and wraps are safe.

Of course, you have to use common sense. I never wore my babies in the cradle position because I thought it looked uncomfortable. Here's an article explaining the difference between the safe slings and the unsafe ones.
