Re: Baby swimming survival video
Even after all my years teaching swimming, I am a freakin' wreck after seeing that. I am just beginning to teach DS his survival techniques in the water. I can only hope he will never need to use them.

Re: Baby swimming survival video
The video is scary!!
I spoke to the kids swimming instructor about this video. She spoke to the owner about the video. She said that Jim said despite being amazing the entire time they are in the pool with the baby teaching them to flip over and scream that is all they teach them. 1/2 an hour for months of just single leg kicks and laying on their backs. They learn to do it in a diaper till they are fully clothed. It's insane. I think the way they teach the children at Saf T Swim (kick to get to the surface while turning and grabbing the wall, not panicing and hand over hand to get out) is more practical. IMO.

tough to get into now as i am holding ds cuz hes cranky. sorry about my grammar.
but, the main thing to know is repetition is key. babies know how to kick, so use that to their advantage. starting at 2 months they can start using the techniques. get them used to flipping on their backs, kicking and going back to the wall. not necessarily in that order. those are the 3 main things.
when many parents start teaching swimming they are so happy when their child jumps to them. not good!! this instills in their head that someone will always be there to get them in the middle of the pool, AWAY FROM THE EDGE!!! The main thing you want to teach them is SAFETY, until they can actually swim a bit on their own. Who cares if they can show you a perfect olympic swimmer arm stroke if they can't save themselves?
babies will be extremely upset when they start the techniques, but will get used to it quickly. you dont want them to get panicked the first time they fall in a pool or lake. geez, there's so much to tell. mainly, let your child know that the wall is their friend and that being on their back is a good thing cuz they can BREATHE. there are many holds to do to make them happier to do it in the beginning.
Don't go crazy about flipping them without knowing how much a child is allowed to be under the water. That's the first thing!!!!! Many children, in pools, or even bathtubs, swallow too much water and it can cause water toxicity. It's just as bad as alcohol poisoning in an adult.
i'd be willing to help/teach anybody for free. it's that important.

Saf-T-Swim does teach the flip on the back thing. Not exactly like this video, but similar. They'd teach the baby to kick to the wall while on their back, instead of just screaming.

Is this something I can do with her in the tub...as of right now, she FREAKS when water hits her face, she does not like that at all but I am trying to get her used to it little by little
drowning is one of my biggest fears and I am not the best swimmer so I want to teach her while she is still a baby....please fm me when you have some time

DS just fell asleep!
You can absolutely start in the tub. Get her kicking. Most babies don't necessarily kick with straight legs, instead they look like they are on a bicycle. That's fine. Get her used to being on her back. Many kids completely freak with water on their face, or in their ears. That's because they can no longer see or hear. You know that sound when water goes in your ear? COMPLETELY FREAKS them out! Let them know it's okay. Let them see your face while their on their back. Hold her!! It'll get easier. That can all be done in a tub, with little water.
When you're in pool, and it comes time for her to want to jump in holding your hands, let her jump to you, then IMMEDIATELY bring her hands to the wall so she can hold on. The entire time let them know to kick!!!! Say it 20 times each jump! Kick, kick, kick!!!! After she's at the wall, then praise her.
If you let her jump to you, then praise her, then go to the wall, it'll put into her head that you will be there to bring her to the wall. If she were to fall in she will then come to the surface and look for you, away from the wall. She will only see the wall all the way across the pool, not the wall right behind her from where she fell. Most drownings occur because they are looking for the wall in front of them, a long way away, instead of turning around and getting to that wall.
Oh geez, DS is waking up. Short nap.

Re: Baby swimming survival video
Ive been at STS for years now and I can not recall seeing any instructor take a baby lay them on their backs and bring them to the wall. I know they do "pop ins". They child either sits or stands on the edge, they bring the child under water and turn them around to grab the wall and pull themselves out. I also know they teach them that floating on their back is ok. I've never seen a younger child being taught that if they "fall" in and kick onto their backs.

You are correct. It's done in parts. I wasn't very clear earlier. DS is having a cranky day.
Anyway, when they are very young, they do the kicking on their backs across the pool. (But, they should also be brought to wall a few times as they pass in the pool.) The official kicking on their back by themselves is obviously as they get closer to a year (if they practice often) or even 2-4 years. Every one has a different schedule on when they practice and when they start. Sorry for the confusion. I'm even confusing myself at times.

Yes, the do the foreward and backward kicking for a good deal of the lesson. I know that swimming lessons is a FABULOUS idea for little kids. When Jeremy was 18 months old if he fell in he knew not to panic and get himself turned around and hang on. He was swimming from instructor to stairs at that age. Floored me, let me tell you. Lukie is 10 months old now and we have swimmies on him and he is already learning how to keep himself upright. Emma who is 5 1/2 can swim the length of a pool and tread water. I owe it all to weekly visits to STS for my childrens confidence in the water. Although it costs mucho it is worth it because of the what ifs.
