Bachelor's Degree, "or equivalent"

What does "or equivalent" mean to you?

DH has a 3 year diploma from a University in Ireland, at the time he was there a 4 year degree was not offered. He also has an AAS from FIT here in NY.

To me, this means 5 years college level design education... or the equivalent of a BA/BFA

Thoughts?

ETA before he registered @ FIT we had his Irish University transcripts evaluated to see how it would compare to US standards, and the results were 3 1/2 years towards a BFA. FIT would not take any of the credits Chat Icon

I would say that his schooling with relevant work experience would be an equivalent. To me it means relevant work experience in the field and certifications that balance the lack of formal schooling.

Re: Bachelor's Degree, "or equivalent"

hey C! :) to me, his degree would be an equivalent to a bachelors degree. most university programs in Ireland are three years for a bachelors over there. plus, they do so much more for their leaving cert. than we do for high school graduation. a lot of the courses they take for their leaving cert. would be equivalent to AP courses here which leads to credits towards a bachelors. so i would think this could be the 1/2 that FIT said he was "missing." is his degree considered a bachelors in Ireland? if so, i would make sure its listed like that on his resume/C.V.

Re: Bachelor's Degree, "or equivalent"

I went to college for 3 years before I transfer to FIT and I think I got 9 credits to transfer (an econ class, and maybe 2 more)

I had to start over- that's normal for FIT- most of the classes are so specialized they don't just transfer- but you can prove it should transfer- you need to get the course discription and fight them

anyway- I think the degree from Ireland would be the same as a bachelor's

At companies that I've worked for, whenever HR posted "or equivalent", they meant work experience. Depending on the field, and the level, a year of work experience = year of education, so 4+ years on a related job would equate to a bachelor's degree. Not all fields, of course, but several.
