Backflow Tester

ToH just came by to give us a permit for our backflow (for inground sprinklers). They said we have to have it tested once a year (when it's turned on) by a tester. Gave me a list of probably 100 or more people I can call to do the testing. Does anyone on here have someone they recommend? And if so, how much do you pay?

TIA!

Re: Backflow Tester

Our sprinkler company, Automatic Irrigation, does the backflow valve test every spring when they turn on the system. They charge $70.
You can probabley get someone from the list that charges less.

I don't recall who we use but I have to say, I think it's a racket. It's required every year and every year we have to hire someone to do it. think we pay about 70 dollars for it as well- it's like an additional tax. Don't think my parents in Suffolk ever had to do that. Just tends to seem a bit unfair to me, But maybe others feel differently.

I totally agree. DH and I had the same conversation the other night and we agreed it is total BS!

My parents have had IGS for years and the town just never required them to get the permit. We move into our house and get caught right away.

That being said, for about $300 you can install a device outside that doesn't require annual testing. It probably pays for itself in 5 years or less. I just don't want to spend that money until we decide we're in this house for the long haul.

Town of Oyster Bay will test your backflow device once a year for free. You just have to set up an appointment. I believe you call the water district in your town to schedule.

I"m in the TOB and never knew about this free service.
My water district sends us their form letter each year reminding us that the backflow vavle test is due. They even send a list of local vendors and the amount they charge for the service. BUT never once in all of the years we received this letter have they ever mentioned a "free" service just for living in the TOB.

Must just be my city (Farmingdale) then. I assumed it was a town thing, but thinking about it now, I call the South Farmingdale Water Disrict to schedule so yeah that would make sense. Sorry for the confusion!

When I read your post,
I got upset....thinking about all of the money I might have wasted paying for a free service. Chat Icon
You are lucky that South Farmingdale offers this service for free.
