Backyard Grass Help
Please don’t move
My dh and I lost our minds last year and got to 2 puppies who have turned into 2 huge dogs 91lbs and 77lbs of pure energy. They have destroyed our grass. They have dug up our lawn, ran across it so much we barely have a lawn anymore. It’s 90% dirt. When I got out and look at I want to cry. What are our options? What grows really quick? What is really tough? Looked int sod but it’s not recommended with dogs.

Backyard Grass Help
You're not gonna like what I'm about to say but I'm a firm believer that you can't have a nice yard when you have dogs. We have an 85lb dog and our grass is wrecked (I can only imagine what having 2 would do to it!). He digs everywhere, his pee patches are discolored, any time he runs and "spins out" on the grass, a chunk of it comes flying up leaving behind a dirt hole. We love him to death, but ugh. If you find something that works, please let me know!

Backyard Grass Help
not sure what kind of grass, but they should learn not to dig up the lawn, that would help.

Re: Backyard Grass Help
We have a 100 pound dog. Thankfully he still lifts his leg so we don't get too many pee spots and he doesn't really dig. He does the running thing though lol. However, dh seeded the lawn probably twice a year for a couple years. He still does it at least once a year now. he would over seed as well. Also, we changed the way we water it. We only water 2-3x a week but for a lot longer periods. We were told it makes the roots grow deeper and thus stronger. It seems to have worked. Our grass is pretty thick in June/July and still looks really nice. August it's always so hot that we get the dreaded crab grass and whatnot but we also don't use fertilizer because we have chickens.

I agree in a lot of ways. I’ve always had BIG dogs. My yard never had perfect grass but it’s complete dirt right now. I can’t deal with the mud in my house. These two are puppies at the exact same time and are insane together. I walk them 2x a day but I still have to let them in the yard they need to burn off energy and more poor lawn is a victim of them. Ugh

Look into Zoysa grass
Yes! It may be harsh on our bare feet, but it really holds up the best. Don't be afraid when it turns yellow in october- it's normal.
You buy it in "plugs" that you plant 6" apart from each other in early spring, then it spreads.
Zoysia is a warm-season, perennial, turf-type grass that spreads by stolons and rhizomes. Its dense turf is characterized by stiff leaf blades. Zoysia exhibits exceptional wear tolerance, good drought tolerance and moderate shade tolerance. Zoysia has a low-water and nutrition requirement. Once fully established, it resists weeds well due to its dense growth pattern. Zoysia does turn brown after the first hard frost but resumes growth as soil temperatures return to 70 degrees F. Note: Zoysia turns dormant earlier in the winter than other warm-season grasses and may remain brown longer. Other zoysia characteristics to note include:
Daily Sunlight Required: Adaptable to full sun to partial shade (six to eight hours of sunlight)
Sun Tolerance: Excellent
Shade Tolerance: Moderate
Grass Color: Dark green in season, tan/brown when dormant
Grass Texture: Medium
Drought Tolerance: Good
Disease Resistance: Good
Traffic Tolerance: Exceptional
USDA Planting Zones: 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 (may not be adaptable to all areas within each climatic zone). Find your USDA Zone.

And the best thing....as it grows and spreads it chokes out weeds.
