Bacl From the Ped and So Upset
We had Taylors 2 month well child visit today. She has a hemangioma on top of her head (also called a strawberry). Its been there since ibirth, she has one on her stomach also. Within the past week and a half, I noticed the one on her head is a little raised. The ped said they happen all the time, but he would check it. Well, due to the location of it, he is now referring us to a pediatric dermatologist. He said for all he knows, it could be nothing, but it could turn out to be a defect. I didnt think it really bothered me, but now that I am sitting here by myself, I am having a breakdown and crying my eyes out.

Aww, I'm sorry. It's good that they are being pro-active about it.

Re: Bacl From the Ped and So Upset
When I was a baby I had 5 or 6 of them on my head/neck.
They all went away and all I have now is a little soft spot where they were.
I'm sure its fine!!!! Don't get too crazy!!!

I'm sorry you are so upset! My DD has a raised hemangioma on her belly. We were also refered to a pediatric dermatologist. He checked her out and it was fine. we just have to monitor it over the next 6 months to make sure it doesn't grow. I know how you feel, I was worried too.

Awww! I know how you feel. No one wants to know that something might be wrong with their child. Try to keep it together, after all, it may be nothing after all! Your DD is beautiful!

I have one on my ankle, it is best that they are dealing with it now...they didn't try to remove mine til I was 11 and it couldn't completely be removed.
I am sure it will go away

I know it's easier said than done but try not to get upset until there is reason to be. The doctor is just being cautious which is great.

Re: Bacl From the Ped and So Upset
My DD has one on her back. I know how you feel because she also has this other mark on her back that had to be biopsied when she was 2 weeks old. It was so upseting to have your 2 week old wiht a stitch in her back.
She also goes to a pediatric derm. These strawberry mark starts off as a skin colored mark then turns red. I was also told that its nothing to worry about. I just have to bring Paige to the dermatolgist every few months.
I wouldnt worry.

Re: Bacl From the Ped and So Upset
My DS has a hemangioma on his head also. It's on the side of his head by his ear, and it's a cavernous one, meaning it's the red raised blood vessels plus a deeper blood vessel which looks like a little bump on his head.I know exactly how you feel, it upsets me very much too. But my pediatricians assured me it's benign and will eventually go away on its own, although it may take many years. It has more than doubled in size since I first noticed it, which was about a month after birth. I just feel badly because it is noticeable and it looks painful, even though it apparently is not.
I try not to get upset about it since there's not much I can do at this point. I believe it can eventually be treated with lasers and steroids when DS is older, but I know doctors will not touch it now unless absolutely necessary. I may seek out another opinion from a pediatric dermatologist in the future.
So I wouldn't worry too much. But it never hurts to see the dermatologist to get another opinion. I'm sure your DC will be just fine.
ETA: The doctors told me the hemangioma would double in size or more, and that seems to be pretty typical. It's definitely nerve-wracking, but it eventually stops growing and then fades over time.

Re: Bacl From the Ped and So Upset
I read more on hemangiomas than I care to know. Maddie was born with one on her stomach. It has spread out & started to fade. The ped measures it each month & checks it out.
The fear with hemangiomas is if it grows internally which is why they need to check it out. If they're on the throat, near the eye or on the belly are the main concerns.
The majority of them are completely harmless. As you can see, many of our peds referred us to pediatric dermatologists, which was just precautionary.
I'm sure she'll be just fine.

Re: Bacl From the Ped and So Upset
Thank you all for your support, it makes me feel so much better. I am going to call the pediatric dermatologist today and make an appointment to have her checked out. Hopefully, even though its in a bad spot, it will be ok!
I made an appointment with Dr. Hayman, but I have to wait until July 19th

Hopefully the derm will say it is nothing. Sydney has one on her chest and the doctors told us it will go away on its own.

We are going to the office in Commack also. The only reason we got the appt in July was due to a cancellation. I am taking the wait into consideration that he is a really good dr...

Laura
I am so sorry - but don't think the worst just yet!
The night before I took Cailen to the dr. to check the lump on his head, I was just like you - hysterical crying after not thinking I was worried.... I was thinking the worst, and was asking DH - whats if its this... what if its that...
It turned out to be nothing! Taylor's is probably nothing too - it just doesnt hurt to check to be on the safe side!!!
Good luck and keep us posted!
