Baked French Toast Casserole

DH's Aunt made this on Christmas morning - and it was DELICIOUS!

She used walnuts instead of pralines!

Baked French Toast Casserole w/ Praline Topping

1 loaf French bread (13 to 16 ounces)
8 large eggs
2 cups half-and-half
1 cup milk
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Dash salt
Praline Topping, recipe follows
Maple syrup

Slice French bread into 20 slices, 1-inch each. Arrange slices in a generously buttered 9 by 13-inch flat baking dish in 2 rows, overlapping the slices. In a large bowl, combine the eggs, half-and-half, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt and beat with a rotary beater or whisk until blended but not too bubbly. Pour mixture over the bread slices, making sure all are covered evenly with the milk-egg mixture. Spoon some of the mixture in between the slices. Cover with foil and refrigerate overnight.
The next day, preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Spread Praline Topping evenly over the bread and bake for 40 minutes, until puffed and lightly golden. Serve with maple syrup.

Praline Topping:
1/2 pound (2 sticks) butter
1 cup packed light brown sugar
1 cup chopped pecans
2 tablespoons light corn syrup
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Combine all ingredients in a medium bowl and blend well. Makes enough for Baked French Toast Casserole.

Re: Baked French Toast Casserole

This is another recipe for the same thing from Melbernai!

i have a recipe that everyone loves for baked french toast---you don't even need syrup for it really - just eat it as is!

prepare it the night before and just bake it in the morning.

6 eggs
1 cup of milk
1 loaf of bread
1 stick of butter
1 cup brown sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
1tsp vanilla

mix butter cinn. vanilla, sugar together -- sprinkle 1/2 of mixtuer on the bottom of a large baking dish.

remove crusts from bread and make one layer in dish.

pour half of egg/milk mixture over bread.

put a 2nd layer of bread in baking dish.
pour over the rest of egg mixture and crumble the rest of sugar mixture on top.

let it sit in the fridge overnight for the bread to get nice and soaked up.

bake in a 350 oven for about 20-25 minutes or until nicely browned.

yumm!! my friend makes something like this... but with like a butterscotch topping. so yummy!!
i dont have the recipe, but its great to make if you are having people staying over your house for the holidays and want to give them breakfast in the morning, but not do all the work- lol you can make it ahead of time, and just pop it in the oven in the morning to cook.

There's a Creme Brulee French Toast recipe on allrecipes.com that is similar and DELICIOUS...I made it for Mother's Day last year and it was a huge hit with our family:

Creme Brulee French Toast

I substituted fat free half and half...and I used Amaretto instead of oranfe liquor

Yeah, it's delicious...and the best part was that you assemble it the night before...so it's less work the next day. My family is still talking about it, and I made it in May!
