Baking question

How much batter does the average cake recipe yield? Say for a yellow cake? I saw this great cake pan at William Sonoma that I'd like to get DH 's aunt for Christmas but it only holds 6 cups. Is this too small for most cake recipes?

Thanks!

Re: Baking question

6 cups seems like a lot of batter to me.

Re: Baking question

My recipes go by the dimensions of the cake pan, not the number of cups.

For instance, my bundt pan is 9" wide. What kind of pan is it? I could tell you what standard sizes should be.

By the way, Williams Sonoma sells an insanely good baking book:

Essentials of Baking

It has beginner's information that I've never seen before, in such detail. It also has all kinds of recipes, even ones that require quite a bit of work and expertise.

I've made 4 recipes so far, and everyone loves the results. Chat Icon

Re: Baking question

Six cups isn't a problem. I just looked up their springform pans and they are standard 9 or 10" in diameter and 3" high.

They have a 9" square springform that looks like it's 3" high and it holds 10 cups.

So 6 cups sounds just about right for a 9 or 10" round. Chat Icon

I bought that train pan!!! I was wondering the same thing!!!

I think I'm going to make it next week for our Christmas luncheon, I'd better find out first!!

I guess you could always make two batches of cake (if one is not enough) and make cupcakes with the rest!

I'm thinking that since DH's aunt is Italian, there are always tons of desserts served on holidays, birthdays, etc. So the train cake would be just one of many. But, I still want her to be able to use a full batch of whatever cake batter she makes. I wouldn't want her favorite cake batter to be 10 cups, and she wastes 4. Know what I mean?
