Bank teller commented on my paycheck
I went to the bank earlier today and handed the bank teller my paycheck to deposit. He looked at it and said
"This is what you make working at the library?! Damn!"
Is it just me or is that really inappropriate and rude? I was really annoyed but I didn't know what to say. The teller was a guy who looked to be in his early 20's. None of the other tellers commented so maybe they realized that was not something he should be commenting on.

Did you tell him what it takes to get to that position. I don't think people realize the work involved in becoming and being a librarian.

That is totally and completely inappropriate. While I would probably let it slide (maybe with a comment of my own like "I don't see how it's your business what I make") if it makes you uncomfortable I would absolutely say something to the bank manager - because you're probably not the first person he's said something to.

It actually got worse after the paycheck comment.
He then jokingly asked if they were hiring at the library and I told him in a not so sweet tone that he'd have to get his masters degree first. His response:
"You need your masters to check out books?"
I was steaming at this point and I looked for his nametag but he wasn't wearing one.

I think that was VERY inappropriate!! But I assume he meant it in a good way, like "wow, I didn't realize you could make so much working at a library". If it wasn't meant as an insult, I would take it as a compliment  and assume he was maybe trying to be friendly or possibly even flirting with you in some strange way.
But yes, TOTALLY inappropriate.

What an idiot. That's really all that can be said for that. If you ever have him as a teller again, and he does it again, I'd say something. He probably was trying to make conversation and is too stupid to know what's appropriate.

Ok definitely inappropriate....i would just chalk it up to inexperience at life and being "young." I wouldn't be insulted just shocked that he actually felt the need to comment on both your salary and the process of obtaining your job.

i guess it was the day for stupid bank tellers.
he was rude!
the one i had was just plain stupid. i handed her $700. after she counted it, she asked if the 7 on the deposit slip was a 1

His comment is inappropriate no matter what your profession is. As a fellow librarian, I can relate. My other favorite comment is "Oh it must be so nice to read all day". Unfortunately, there are some people who think that everyone who works in a library is a librarian.
See if you can get direct deposit.

This reminds me of when I deposited an ins. Settlement check into my account
It was clearly from aflac...yet I was asked how I came into this money...and then I called my bank to upgrade my money market account to something with higher interest and I got grilled again...next time I get a large check I am having it made out to my dad's financial planner...my bank is out of luck on that

Wow, that is so inappropriate of him to make any kind of comment on a check you are depositing. It is none of his business how much you make. I think you would have been more than justified in speaking to his manager about his faux pas.

I worked in a medical library when I was much younger, so I know all about Library Science degrees.
But oh boy that comment... he has brass ones for saying that.

A remark like that wouldn't bother me but my mom is a librarian and I cannot stand the ignorance when people do not realize that she had to get a master's degree. People ask me all the time why I don't become a law librarian. I would need a masters in addition to my law degree.
